Math
We have continued with our measurement unit by comparing the weight of different objects. We learned how to use a balance in order to compare which object is heavier and which object was lighter. Another way we used the balance was to find out the weight of an object by using a number of manipulatives. They needed to be able to balance the balance in order to find the weight that was the same. Some students even used the seesaw at recess to compare their weights.
Reading
This week in reading we began a new reading unit: Reading with Sight Word Power! We started off by learning about how we can be Super Readers. Our very first super power we learned was our Pointer Power! We used our fingers and other pointers to tap each word as we read along in books. We made sure that long words only had one tap and used familiar sight words to check our reading. The kids had a great time practicing this new skill and have reminded us teachers to use our own pointer power!
Writing and Phonics
We kept working on writing our first and last names. Many of us are starting to remember to use our upper and lower case letters correctly, and some of us have even begun writing both names all on our own!
In phonics this week we focused on the last sound in words. This skill can be challenging as students often want to pick out the first sound instead. Please keep practicing this skill at home!
Kindergarten Service Learning
This year in kindergarten we will be participating in a Service Learning project. We have reached out to Cedarhurst Assisted Living and will be finding ways to assist and interact with the residents there. We are beginning this relationship by creating holiday cards to send over. We created cute snowmen crafts to add some winter cheer to the retirement facility. Later in the year we may have the opportunity to visit to play boardgames, create a craft, or perform songs for the residents there. We are very excited to help our community in this way!
