Last week was a short week, but a good week. If we didn't have an opportunity to meet for a conference last week, please contact me to schedule a time.
This week we have lots going on. To start off with, you should have received a pink flyer about the Book Drive. This is such a great opportunity for Copper Canyon! We are going to get our very own Little Free Library. Click on this link to read more about it and to watch a short video. If you have any questions, please send me an email or stop by.
Be sure to support the Book Fair. There are so many fantastic books to choose from and if you have any gently used books that you no longer want or even some new ones, please donate them to our Book Drive.
I recently read about a fun event that local McDonalds are hosting. It is called Family Reading Day. It is happening on Saturday, November 2nd. Beginning at 1 p.m., the first 100 families that visit their local McDonald's restaurant will receive a free Scholastic book (toddler to 6th grade), ice cream cone and Read On Arizona Early Literacy Guide for Families to help support their child's reading. Click here for more information.
Lastly, on December 7th, Paradise Valley Community College will once again have their Festival of Tales. This is a fantastic event. I take my own children to it twice a year. It consists of storytelling, arts and crafts, games and FREE books! I will send more information as I receive it. If you are available that day, save the date for a really fun event!
All of the classes will be participating in Halloween festivities, so we will not have class on Thursday.
Have a fantastic week!
3rd and 4th Grade Math
This week we will continue working with addition patterns. This week we will again focus on patterns of 3 and 4. We have been building basic understanding of multiplication. The students will be showing how many different ways they can describe a dot diagram. This week's math game is called The 18th Hole. Please be sure that your child plays the new math game and returns the math game on Friday. As always, you can find a copy of this week's game under Math Games on my website.
5th Grade Wilson Reading
With our Little Free Library project well on its way and with Mrs. Church adding the artistic touch we can bring our focus back to beginning a new reading project. On Monday, we will be starting the book Clawed! by Dottie Enderle. We will be working on a different supporting assignment for this book everyday of this week, except Thursday- Halloween! The students will be reading about two chapters per day, finding vocabulary, comparing and contrasting characters, predicting, finding the problem and solution, and discussing the story setting. We are really looking forward to starting this unit and adding lots of fun into it.
5th and 6th Grade Reading
With our Little Free Library project well on its way and with Mrs. Church adding the artistic touch we can bring our focus back to some reading activities. On Monday and Tuesday, we will be reading a short story from American Mystery Tours called "Ghosts of the White House." This is a wonderful book that makes the students stop throughout the story to think and answer questions about what they have read before continuing with the story. We will be learning vocabulary from the story on Monday and conclude the story on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will be starting a Six Way Paragraphs story called "Face Off at the Colosseum" We will be focusing on the vocabulary words for the story on this day. For homework, the students will answer the comprehension questions that go with the story. On Friday, the students should be prepared to discuss their answers to the questions and provide supporting details.
6th Grade Reading
This week will be an intense reading week for sixth grade reading. On Wednesday we will be starting a Six Way Paragraphs story called "The Crusades." We will be focusing on the vocabulary words for the story on this day. For homework, the students will answer the comprehension questions that go with the story. On Friday, the students should be prepared to discuss their answers to the questions and provide supporting details.
1st Grade Reading
This week we will continue to review letters and sounds. We will be working on using tapping for reading and spelling three letter words. We have now added in reading and spelling words with digraphs. Our goal is to be charting the students’ fluency 2-3 times per week. Be sure to be working on the assigned probe each week. This week's probe is 10.
4th Grade Reading
6th Grade Writing
This week we will continue writing about the Catalina trip and for those students that did not attend the trip, they will be writing about the activities that they did at school while the other students were at Catalina. This week we will focus on finishing the introductory paragraph and write the concluding paragraph. Hopefully, the scholars will type their rough draft by the end of the week. Each day we will continue to work with Four Level Grammar. This is a program that is being used throughout the school to immerse children in grammar. I have used this program for years and it is very effective and carries over to reading. We will spend 5-10 minutes a day on grammar.
2nd and 1st Grade Reading
Last week, your child should have brought home a parent information form, which can also be filled out on my website, and a request for supplies for your child. Please look over all the information. If you are able to send in the requested materials, I would really appreciate it!
