The Second Grade Scoop
February 17th, 2017
Hello Second Grade Families,
It has been an exciting week in 2R with the Valentine's Day celebrations, 100th Day fun and our half day today! Thank you for all your help during these celebrations. The kids had a great time exchanging their cards and seeing each other's 100th day outfits. Another big thank you to our room parents for a wonderful Valentine's Day party. Enjoy the long weekend!

Math
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts.
- Practice telling time using an analog clock. Students have learned how to tell time to the minute so it is just a matter of requiring them to do so.
- Involve your child in checking that you got the right change from the cashier.
- Ask your child to give you a ballpark estimate to check their work with 2-digit addition.
- Pose one or two step number stories to your child.
- Check out Number Grid Difference on the Everyday Math website!
Reader's Workshop
Writer's Workshop
Our latest unit in Writer's Workshop is called Writing About Reading. Students started this unit by writing letters to a friend or family member about their favorite story character. We have since learned to write about other parts of a text we might have opinions on like the cover, illustrations or a certain chapter or page. The students consider their audience while writing to determine whether or not they need to retell important details about the story before discussing their favorite part. On Wednesday, the students finally got to deliver their letters to the people they had written to. Below, you will see pictures of students reading about their classmate's favorite books/characters.
Science
Next week, we will begin our study of balancing and weighing.

Order Due Date - Saturday, February 25th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the January purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 6 free books for our classroom! The books are set to arrive on Monday. I will also send home the February catalogues on Monday. Please take a few moments to explore the selection together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read.
For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $10 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
