Library News
What's New at the Wiggin Street Library
Have a wonderful summer!
This is our fourth and final newsletter for this school year. It's been a terrific year! I would like to thank all of the families who contributed to our Bound To Stay Bound fundraiser. We were able to purchase 23 new books for our library from this fundraiser alone. These new books, along with the books we received from our district funds, have really helped update our shelves.
This newsletter is full of information to help your kids keep reading all summer. I've included family read aloud suggestions, websites to check out before your summer library trips, and INFOhio's summer resources for parents.
Have a great break!
Fun Family Read Alouds for the Summer
James and Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
After James Henry Trotter's parents are tragically eaten by a rhinoceros, he goes to live with his two horrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge. Life there is no fun, until James accidentally drops some magic crystals by the old peach tree and strange things start to happen. The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a house. Inside, James meets a bunch of oversized friends—Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug, and more. With a snip of the stem, the peach starts rolling away, and the great adventure begins!
The Prairie Thief by Melissa Wiley
Louisa Brody’s life on the Colorado prairie is not at all what she expected. Her dear Pa, accused of thievery, is locked thirty miles away in jail. She’s living with the awful Smirches, her closest neighbors and the very family that accused her Pa of the horrendous crime. And now she’s discovered one very cantankerous—and magical—secret beneath the hazel grove. With her life flipped upside-down, it’s up to Louisa, her sassy friend Jessamine, and that cranky secret to save Pa from a guilty verdict.
Summer According to Humphrey by Betty Birney
When Humphrey hears that school is ending, he can't believe his ears. What's a classroom hamster to do if there's no more school? It turns out that Mrs. Brisbane has planned something thrilling for Humphrey and Og the frog: they're going to Camp Happy Hollow with Ms. Mac and lots of the kids from Room 26! Camp is full of FUN-FUN-FUN new experiences, but it's also a little scary. There are fur-raising wild sounds and smells, and there's something called the Howler to watch out for. Humphrey is always curious about new adventures, but could camp be too wild even for him?
INFOhio Resources for Ohio Families
You have a fun way to keep your child’s reading skills sharp this summer with downloadable "Beach Bags" for K-3 and the virtual Camp INFOhio for grades 4-6. Beach Bags feature stories and activities that let children practice reading skills while learning about careers and their environment. Camp INFOhio contains five days of reading, activities, and experiments centered on STEAM topics. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math. Kids can try their hand at code breaking, conduct science experiments with items they find in the kitchen, learn about roller coasters before designing their own, and create their own musical instruments. The Beach Bags and Camp INFOhio are offered free to all Ohio families and schools by INFOhio and the Ohio Department of Education. Find them all by going to www.infohio.org and clicking Summer Fun! in the What’s New box.
Book Wizard and Book Alike make summer reading fun and easy
I don't know if this is true for your family, but my children often struggle finding what they want at the public library during our weekly trips in the summer. This summer I plan to have my kids spend a few minutes on Book Wizard and Book Alike before we leave for the library. This is another great free resource for families. You can search using the "All Books" tab by keyword, author and title, or you can look for books that are similar to other books your child as enjoyed using the "Similar Books" tab.
