Writing True Stories
This month third graders will be introduced to the writing workshop that will increase writing productivity and independence. The students will spend more time with the routines of writing and collecting lots of quick drafts of possible stories in their notebook.
The classes will also study mentor texts for word choice, literacy language and more about narrative craft. They will also spend time learning conventions to apply to their editing.
Reading
In September students will be reading mostly short pieces of non-fiction text. We’ll continue to become more proficient in “close reading” - or reading to make sure you truly understand the text and can dig deeper. We will focus on asking and answering questions to demonstrate understanding of text and referring back to and citing the text when answering those questions. We will also work on determining the main idea of a text by recounting details and explaining how they support the main idea.
