Welcome note from our president
Dear AAUW Members,
It’s spring, and that usually means one thing to me-state convention time in Minnesota. We find ourselves for the second year in a row of not planning that trip to some special place in Minnesota where we can enjoy the speakers and the workshops and leave energized to go back to our branches with new ideas to continue our mission of advancing gender equity for women and girls.
We have all had to make changes in our lives this past year due to the pandemic. The AAUW MN Board has worked hard to do this annual meeting, which in the past meeting was identified as our convention. This is our first electronic meeting open to all AAUW MN members using zoom. It is not the same as a gathering “in person” but it is a way to keep us connected and informed. Our “convention book” will be an electronic version identified as the 2020 AAUW MN Annual Meeting Information, (AMI) and will contain the components of our annual meeting as well as the officers’ reports. We hope we get to “see” many of you at the annual meeting via zoom.
We are proud of a program that was initiated by the AAUW MN State Board this year. In the fall of each year, the state board participates in an activity called Board to Branch. Board members are assigned to make two or three calls, usually to the branch president, about branch activities and needs.
This year the need for speakers and programs were identified as major needs. The focus of the board became a way to meet the identified need and provide an opportunity that all members could access speakers and programs regardless of the location and size of the branch. Zoom was identified to meet the need without having to have members leave their homes.
The board decided to use some program grant funds to develop a state-sponsored program on a trial basis without cost to branches or members. Minneapolis made an offer to share their programs which were wonderful because the programs were all designed through the end of May. AAUW MN members were notified about the opportunity to sign up and identify programs they were interested in by subject, date, and time by the Pine Editor/Web Site Manager, Cyndy Harrison. (We have already received a request from out of state to participate, but have said no.)
Can you envision a program of women helping women, branch helping branch, and state helping state? What program opportunities we would have!
