"Tips for Teaching Math to Elementary Students"~Gary Scarpello
Scarpello (2010) acknowledged that math can be intimidating for students and even teachers alike. It is crucial that teachers dialogue with colleagues when internalizing, planning, and polishing their instructional practice with regard to math content and understanding multiple ways of problem solving. The below link will offer ten tips in teaching your students. [Electronic]
"Why the Common Core Changes Math Instruction"~Valerie Faulkner
Faulkner (2013) advised there has to be a shift in terms of explanation, application, and linking mathematical concepts in a broader sense of understanding. How do you go about this? Faulkner (2013) provided a reflective stance when defining, planning and providing rationalizations in presenting a shift in mathematical pedagogy. [Electronic]
"What Does Good Math Instruction Look Like"~Nancy Protheroe
While this research article dates back to the Pre-Common Core Era, Protheroe (2007) acknowledged key components of classroom instruction and student engagement centered upon math that coincides with sound instructional practice.
"Are You Ready for Common Core Math?"~Alan Dessoff
The Common Core places a great deal of emphasis on the component of writing. Thus, students must consistently work to craft their oral and written communication skills in preparing for assessments that surpasses multiple choice testing to open ended questions that continue to infuse multiple step problems with an added focus on real world application. Dessoff (2012) stated, open ended questions will demand students to be able to clearly define and articulate their thought processes. Be sure to check out the resources at the bottom of the article for added resources in preparing students for Common Core math assessments.
"Go Figure Math and the Common Core"~Marilyn Burns
Burns (2012) recounted the importance of mental math as a very important life-long skill that can be used on a daily basis. This article takes a closer look and the thought processes of students when solving a single math problem and the importance of understanding the thinking of all students. Burns (2012) explained the conceptual use of "The Math Reasoning Inventory" (p. 46). Burns (2012) stated, "The Math Reasoning Inventory (MRI) is an online tool that helps teachers assess their students' numerical proficiency" (p.46). Clink on the below link for more information.
At the time of this research, it appears the website for the Math Reasoning Inventory is nonexistent. However, information may be gleaned from http://mathsolutions.com/about-us/marilyn-burns/. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the webpage under the category of Free Resources for a wealth of resources.

Structure of Support Centered on Students through Research
"Research Brief: Multi-tier System of Support (MTSS) Introduction: From RTI and PBIS to MTSS"~Orla Higgins Averill & Claudia Rinaldo
What kind of support is there for the struggling math students within a classroom? This article explains the renaming of the Response to Intervention (RtI) to the
Multi-Tier System of Support (MTSS) when providing researched based strategies to use within the classroom for students at promise who may have deficient areas that demand specific intervention in growing toward proficiency within content areas. Be sure to checkout the resources provided in developing strategic measures of meeting the needs of all students.
