Monday Memo - February 13, 2023
We hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Thank you for making time to connect with our staff during winter conferences this past week. Your collaboration with our teachers is a crucial piece of the student experience at Washburne. We know our staff were excited to share and reflect on the progress made by Washburne students as they continue to demonstrate the characteristics listed in our Portrait of a Graduate.
As we head into spring (hopefully sooner rather than later if the current weather is any indication), we are encouraged by our students’ resilience and look forward to their continued growth and development.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
New Trier Scheduling Conferences - TODAY!
Thank you to all of our 8th grade families who have signed up for a scheduling conference with New Trier on Monday, February 13th. Parents should enter the school through the gym entrance off the Elm St. parking lot and go directly to the North Gym. If your conference is during school hours, we will send your child to meet you in the gym. If your conference is after school, please bring your child with you. Parents should arrive approximately 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment to ensure that we stay on schedule.

What’s Happening in Related Studies
In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.
The creative writing students finished their poetry unit and are well into planning their longer fiction stories. They began the unit by learning about the various ways that writers develop characters, such as through actions, dialogue, and thoughts. To playfully practice with the different characterization techniques, groups of students acted out skits demonstrating each method while the class discussed the performances. Some groups got very creative and even made puppets! Currently the students are plotting out their long stories and beginning the drafting process. At the end of the trimester, they will have the opportunity to share their stories with their classmates.
