A Message from the Principal

Cavalier Nation,

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break. I would like to welcome you back to school as we start the second semester tomorrow, January 10th, 2022. Report Cards for the first semester will be mailed out to families by the end of this week.

It is important for all of our students to start this semester as strong as possible by attending school every day (unless you are sick), completing assignments on time, and seeking out teachers for help when needed. We also ask for students to check school emails on a regular basis and view the Cavalier Contact so you are informed on all things CHS.

This issue of the Cavalier Contact contains information on the second semester, student activities, and more. If you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to contact me at jjust@ccps.us or by calling (804)633-9886 ext 5113. Thank you for helping us with the goal of all Cavaliers learning today and leading tomorrow!

Sincerely,

Mr. Joshua Just

Y Street is the largest youth-led volunteer movement in the Commonwealth that focuses on making healthy behaviors easier and more accessible both in-and-out of the school environment.Y Street members learn how to advocate through the work they do to educate the community, meet with local and state-level decision-makers, such as members of the Virginia general assembly, and use social media to spread awareness. Y Street is funded by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, so it is completely free for all students. Plus, Y Street members can earn rewards like scholarships, laptops, and gift cards for the work they do.Interested students who are new to Y Street should head to my.ystreet.org/apply to complete their application and parent permission form. Returning students just need to log in to their account on my.ystreet.org and sign up to attend the January 12th Training Kick-Off. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Kelly in the library or at kkelly@ccps.us.

Chesapeake Bay Governor's School Applications

Due to the inclement weather and school closings this week, the deadline for applications for Chesapeake Bay Governor's School is extended to Friday, January 14th. This deadline includes teacher recommendations, so students should be sure to give teachers ample time to complete them by requesting upon return to school if they have not done so already. WANT TO HONOR YOUR GRADUATING SENIOR WITH A LASTING LEGACY?

MAKE A DONATION TO THE CHS LIBRARY! For each $10 donated to the CHS Library, a book will be purchased and a commemorative label will be placed in the front of the book naming the student it honors.

Safety Update from CCPS

CCPS Staff and Families,

As we prepare to begin the 3rd 9-Weeks on Monday, January 3, 2022, CCPS looks forward to a successful and productive 2nd Semester servicing both in-person and virtual learners. In preparation for the reopening of school, please be mindful of and continue to practice the following mitigation practices related to Covid-19 (modified per CDC and/or VDH recommended changes):

Monitor your health daily and stay home if you have 2 or more Covid-19 symptoms. Symptoms include:
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Fever or chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Sore throat

Parents must screen their students daily for the above symptoms and notify the school/keep their child home if they suspect a child may have Covid-19.

Staff must notify their supervisor and stay home if they suspect they have Covid-19.
Come to school with a mask, which must be worn indoors (school bus/car and school).

Isolation and Quarantine:
Individuals who test positive for Covid-19 must isolate for 10 days from symptom onset or the positive test. The student/staff member may return on day 11.

Unvaccinated close contacts must quarantine according to one of the following CDC guidelines:

  • 7 days and return on day 8 if they have no symptoms and a negative test between 5 and 7 days after exposure.
  • 10 days and return on day 11 if they have no symptoms and choose not to get tested.
  • 14 days and return on day 15 if they have no symptoms.

Vaccinated close contacts do not have to quarantine unless they show symptoms. However, the CDC recommends they get tested between 5 and 7 days after exposure, even if symptoms are not experienced.

CCPS acknowledges the newly revised (12/27/21) CDC procedures for Covid-19 isolation and quarantine periods. These changes will be reviewed in collaboration with the VDH and RAHD to evaluate the potential incorporation of the modified protocols for staff and students. A Covid-19 update, including the CDC revisions, will be provided to the School Board at the regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, January 10, 2022.

School Mitigation Practices:
  • Masks are required to be worn indoors by students and staff (school bus/car and school).
  • Hand sanitizer units are located in each classroom.
  • Touchless hand-sanitizer stations are located in various locations in each school.
  • Classrooms are equipped with disinfectant to clean desks after each day.
  • Custodians will clean restrooms regularly throughout the day.
  • Handwashing signs are located on mirrors in restrooms and students will be encouraged to wash hands throughout the day.
  • Water fountains are locked and bottle filling stations have been installed.
  • Contact tracing at building level in partnership with school board, RAHD, and VDH.
  • Offices have signage promoting social distancing.
  • The number of visitors in school offices are limited to promote social distancing.

Vaccination:
The Covid-19 vaccination is available at the following locations:
Caroline Health Department: Call 804-633-5465 for appointment day and times.
Community Vaccination Center, Central Park: Call 877-829-4682 to make an appointment.
Your doctor or pediatrician.

We thank our school community in advance for remaining attentive to Covid-19 mitigation strategies. Through our collaborative efforts, we can diminish transmission and enhance the health and wellness of our students and employees.

Best wishes for a healthy new year!
