Facts & Opinions and How to Tell the Difference
Some Facts and Opinions you come across are pretty easy to tell apart. Others not so much. Here are a few tips for telling the difference.
- For Facts- Usually has information or statistics.
- For Facts- If it has a number in it- it's generally a fact. (But not always.)
- For Opinions- Usually has adjectives (Ex: Beautiful, Wonderful, Best, etc.)
- For Opinions- Sometimes it will over exaggerate. (That was the BEST movie in the entire world!, Everyone LOVED It!, etc.)
Tricky Things:
- If your statement is "Everyone in the ice cream parlor, probably loves this place." Then that is most likely an opinion. Why? Because the statement does not show ANY factual evidence to support it. What would that look like? I'll show you.
- If your statement was changed to say,"I took a poll and 100% of the customers on Friday May 6th said they enjoyed their ice cream." That would be a fact. It's using a "poll" which is a form of a statistic rating. But as you can see saying,"Everyone in the ice cream parlor, probably loves this place." is actually the same as saying, "I took a poll and 100% of the customers on Friday May 6th said they enjoyed their ice cream."
- What to be careful with is if they said,"Everyone in the ice cream parlor, probably loves this place." and they have nothing under it. It's an opinion.
- Where as if it was, "Everyone in the ice cream parlor, probably loves this place." and THEN "I took a poll and 100% of the customers on Friday May 6th said they enjoyed their ice cream." It is a fact.
Fact and Opinion
But Another thing to consider is if you use a world like "low"- for example "His grades were low." It can be debated if his grades are low or not. Unless there was evidence that he does not meet a standard. It's an iffy one you have to be careful with.
Opinion
Cannot be proven one way or other.
Fact
Can be proven.
What is it?
Can you tell if it's fact or opinion?
