The Dragon's Tale
The Biweekly Newsletter of the Kaohsiung American School
2020-2021, Issue #2: August 24
Dear KAS Families,
Thank you to each family that participated in this week’s (virtual) Open House. We miss having KAS families on campus, and it was so nice to connect with each of you! Safety remains our top priority, and we sincerely hope for the pandemic circumstances to improve so we can fully reopen our campus. Until then, we will continue creating meaningful opportunities to connect families together with faculty and staff for the benefit of our students. If you have any other questions, concerns, or ideas that you hope to discuss, we encourage you to email your child’s teacher directly. We want to hear from you, and we are happy to partner with you on behalf of KAS students.
We believe that good communication is important for building mutual trust, and that can ultimately provide an advantage for students. For that reason, each year we share our Constructive Communication Policy, and it is available here: http://gg.gg/KASCommsPolicy
This document is updated with contact information for many people you may need to communicate with at KAS. It includes our beliefs about communication, and guidance for who to speak with to get your questions answered and your concerns heard and resolved. Please take a look, and please let us know of any questions. We want to hear from you.
We share the belief that every KAS student should graduate with meaningful options. Every year our graduates enter some of the best universities and colleges in the world (see more details below in our College Corner section), and we want to do even better for students. This year all KAS faculty from PK to G12 are working together to revamp our curriculum, and to make it better than ever. Due to the large scope of this effort, we anticipate it will take even longer than this school year to complete. You know that our graduates already move onward from KAS thinking BIG. Just imagine a future where our graduates go forward having learned in an even more cohesive curriculum. The possibilities are endless. This effort is one part of our larger plan to further improve the education we offer. We will share more information about this effort and others in the future, and always welcome your questions.

Ms Deborah Haines, IB/AP Coordinator
I would like to welcome this year’s 55 new IB Diploma candidates. These grade 11 students have chosen the most rigorous academic path at KAS. Besides taking 6 two-year honors level courses, these students will progress their development as balanced human beings through Creativity, Activity, and Service projects, a Theory of Knowledge course that will help them develop their thinking abilities, and a research project that will result in a 4,000 word research paper.
New Diploma students: understand that you are part of a cohort of more than 170,00 students in 146 countries who will take the same level of classes, complete the same assessments, and sit for the same exams in May of 2022. This makes you part of a special international group of teenagers who seek to better themselves academically and personally. And you will be well-prepared for success in whatever challenges the world may offer.
As the IB Coordinator, I applaud these students for their desire for challenge, and I offer my support where needed. Good luck students!
Seniors are working hard on their college applications to meet upcoming deadlines this fall. KAS College Counselors and students are actively monitoring and adjusting their final list of schools. We are excited to see the diversity of schools and the possible majors they are choosing! Typically, most students at KAS apply to about 9 - 12 universities worldwide. On average, in 2019 and 2020, students at KAS were accepted to 40 - 45% of the schools on their list giving them many choices to consider.
This fall, we are offering Tick Tock Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3 - 4 pm for students who want additional writing support and help with their college applications. We are also meeting individually with all seniors.
For Juniors, we will hold our first meeting with the entire Class of 2022 on September 16, 2020 during their advisory block at school. We will also be meeting with Grade 9 students later this fall to kick-off tips for a successful high school career and to introduce college counseling to students.

Are you interested in following places where our recent graduates have accepted offers of admission to university? We have just recently updated the list of KAS College Acceptances 2018 - 2020 on our website. We are very proud of our students achievements and for the excellent choice of schools they were accepted into this year. Many of our alumni are starting college this year online here in Taiwan, and we have enjoyed seeing them get started on this next journey even if not on campus as originally planned. Please make an appointment with us anytime to talk about college plans!
