Bohally Newsletter - Week 11 Term 1

11th April 2022

Principal's Welcome

Kia ora tātou

It is hard to believe we are nearly completing term 1 and one-quarter of the way through the year. It seems like the year 7's have been here forever, they have settled in well and it's good to see them forming new friendships and connections.

I would like to personally thank all of our students for showing such resilience with the changes they have experienced with our teachers and some of their friends/classmates away due to COVID. It isn't easy to have different teachers or move to new rooms but at the same time, we have managed to keep the school open and tried to keep it as business as usual. Hopefully, we are getting through the worst of it. Our staff have been wonderful and need lots of praise as many of them have had to cover for colleagues, lose their release time and meet the needs of different students in their classes - I haven't heard one complaint from any of them.

Many of you will be wondering where we are at with the new school rebuild. I am hoping to share a newsletter from the team soon, but if you ever want information please refer to the website - https://www.tetatoruowairau.nz/ For many of you, it may feel that it is never going to happen but I want to reassure you that we are moving ahead with this project and things are happening!

Hopefully, you all received an email from Dan Hammond recently about our concerns around social media. This is a very important topic and we are genuinely concerned about how much access some of our students have to social media, even though many of them are younger than the specified age requirements. Our preference would be that none of our students use it, but at the end of the day, you as parents make that decision, not us. Our advice is that you monitor their screen time usage and keep checks on who they are socialising with and in what way, just as you would if they were meeting friends in person. Remember you don't open your front door and let everyone in, the same is true for social media.

Finally, enjoy your Easter break, hopefully, you all get some time off to spend with your families? We finish term one at 3pm on Thursday 14th April and return for term two on Monday 2 May. We look forward to reconnecting with you all then.

Ngā mihi,

Nicky

John Orchard will be sharing his vast knowledge with our students and engaging them in some rich NZ history. Your child's teacher will send you more information regarding the exact dates and times their class will be going.

Adventure Week

The end of Term 4 is when most of our students embark on one of the many Adventure Week opportunities we offer. The list of various camps will come out to students early in Term 2. There will be a range of options including free local options which will have day trips/events and run during school hours, and others that travel further afield and have costs involved. Our camps are a fantastic opportunity for your child to step out of their comfort zones, enjoy new experiences, and make new friendships.

You can start making payments to the school office in installments at any time to help spread the cost.

The school account is ASB 123167 0106660 00 with your child's name in the reference field and ADWK or AW.

Meet Our Office Staff....

Last week we said farewell to our wonderful school Executive Officer, Maureen Burrows. Maureen has retired after spending the last 13 years at Bohally. She has worked with at least 4 different Bohally School Principals doing an amazing job supporting the SLT and every teacher and other staff members with huge professionalism and good humour . We will all miss Maureen and wish her a long retirement, playing golf and drinking well-earned coffees with her husband Lindsay.

Replacing Maureen we were very lucky to employ Liz Webb. Liz has come to us from MBC and we all look forward to working with her. Alongside Liz, we also have Julia Brown at the front desk. Julia is who you can contact about absences, general inquiries, and school payments.

You can contact the office by email at office@bohally.school.nz or telephone at 035785219

School App and Facebook

You can keep up-to-date with school notices and any alerts from your child's class teacher or the school, through School Apps. This is able to be downloaded to any iPhone or Android phone. Please subscribe to your child's class as well as General Alerts. Click on the flyer for instructions.

Our school Facebook page is where we can also send out important information, as well as celebrate the learning and activities that are happening in school. Simply "like' the page and be in the loop.

What we have been up to .......Tawhirimatea Term 1 round-up!

What an amazing first term it has been for the Tawhirimatea hub! We've welcomed our Year 7's and managed to set up great routines, despite the rollercoaster of Covid.

It has been great getting so many of us involved in the Triathlon, Swimming Sports, Cricket Tournaments, Friday night volleyball, Rippa Rugby and we've even managed to squeeze in a Mufti-day.

Resilience and positive attitudes have been some of the key attributes we've noticed amongst our team this term. Lots of us have tried new things, developed new relationships and settled into life at Bohally.

Big picture

Life Education

We had three wonderful sessions at Life Education with Harold and Genevieve this term. At each of our sessions, we covered different topics like what it means to have positive relationships with others, the effects of vaping and coping strategies for loss, change, and grief. There were so many great takeaways from these sessions and we would like to say a huge thank you to Gene and Harold for taking the time to teach us about these very important topics. We've all walked away feeling much more aware and feeling confident that we can make good choices.
Big picture

Triathlon

In the first few weeks of term one all students competed in the annual Bohally school triathlon. With lots of sun and cheering, the atmosphere was filled with joy. As bikers and runners raced past, everybody congratulated them and was having fun.

I competed in the team races with Viliami and Kobe. I swam, Kobe biked, and Viliami completed the last leg by finishing the race with a run.

After all the races were over, our hub took a team photo, we finished off the day with a relaxing afternoon and reflections. People pushed past their limits and worked hard to finish their races, by the afternoon everybody was pretty knackered.

Lots of resilience and determination was needed by all competitors, it was clear to see lots of students displaying the school values.

Communication

At Bohally we strive to keep our community up to date with what is happening at school. We have three main ways we communicate - our school app, website, and Facebook page. We recommend downloading our school app. The app will allow you to set up alerts for your child's class and activities. This causes a push notification on your phone if any notices are uploaded. If you have any questions about how to access any of these three systems please talk to your child's teacher. Below are the links for you to follow.
