Head Lice
It is headlice season and we have had a few cases at school. Head lice have been a
problem in schools since the beginning of time, the only way to combat it is for everyone to be vigilant and check their children’s head on a regular basis.
Once treated it is also helpful to tie long hair up when at school as this helps limit the spread of headlice.
How do people get head lice?
Anyone can catch head lice; catching them has nothing to do with not being clean. If you find live head lice or eggs on a family member’s scalp, treat them and check the scalp of everyone in the house.
People get head lice from head to head (hair to hair) contact with someone who already has head lice. This can easily happen when children play together and their heads touch.
Head lice can only crawl from hair to hair. They can't fly or jump from head to head.
Head lice only survive on humans. They die quickly when they are not on the head, usually within 24 hours.
Dimethicone 4% lotion – to treat head lice
Dimethicone 4% lotion is a very effective head lice treatment your doctor can prescribe.
It is fully subsidised on prescription (you do not have to pay).
Dimethicone kills head lice by suffocation (blocking their air supply) and stopping them from being able to regulate water. It is not an insecticide.
