Staffing Update
Mr Barker will be returning to support the office until Christmas. We are looking forward to having him back in school.
Half term reading homework
It has been absolutely wonderful to see the children in school enjoying borrowing books from our new library. Mrs Burrow and Mrs Houlden would love for children to be recommending books to one another. Therefore we have two homework requests.
1. Please write a book review based on the book you have borrowed from the library. We would like this to include a short synopsis of the plot, the genre, reasons why others may choose to read this and a rating out of 10. The best quality reviews will be placed in the library! Please add pictures and make them eye catching.
2. The children continue to really enjoy looking at and being inspired by our ‘Get Caught Reading’ display however, this is now a year old. We would love for you to bring a photo into school of you reading your library book in an unusual place. We would also like staff to do the same. Let’s see who can be the most creative with this homework! This will then turn into our new reading display for the library.
JLT Update
This week the JLT enjoyed meeting with our chief librarian, Mrs Burrow. They had a conversation with her about our library and created a set of questions for each class. These were designed in order to find out about the views of the pupils regarding the library layout, how the books are presented, what they have enjoyed about the library visits and if there are any improvements they feel could be made. It would be fantastic if you could speak to your child about the library, so they have some good ideas they can share when the JLT speak to them after half term.
Mrs Wright’s Class Assembly
I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in Class Six for ending this half term with an outstanding assembly. They have worked incredibly hard this half term and should be proud of everything they have achieved. Well done, year six, Mrs Wright and Mrs Shreeve!
Open Afternoon
Thank you to all the parents who managed to join us for the Circus Open Afternoon. It was lovely to see so many busy classrooms full of activities and discussion. The children were very proud to show you all what they have learnt over the half term.
Anti- Bullying Week -w/c Monday 11th November
Anti-bullying week is an annual UK event held on 11.11.19- 15.11.19 which aims to raise awareness of bullying of children and young people - in schools and elsewhere - and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it. For our children we have chosen to focus on the importance of staying safe, friendship (what makes a good friend) and addressing misconceptions linked to the term bullying.

Uniform and PE kit
Please can I remind you that PE is part of the curriculum and that children need to have the correct kit in school for PE lessons. A useful way to ensure your child has their kit in school, is to send it in to school on a Monday and take it home to wash on a Friday. We will be sending text reminders to children who forget their PE kit to help us all be prepared for learning.

Railway trip
On Tuesday Year 5 had the opportunity to work with Network Rail and Leeds Train Station for Railway safety week hosted at Leeds station. Year 5 were excited to hand their ticket to the conductor when aboard the train from South Milford. The children had an opportunity to learn facts about how to stay safe on the railway during fun and competitive games. They were commended on their teamwork and communication skills. The children also had the opportunity to read train timetables and board a real train. Year 5 also learnt how cameras are used by British Transport police to keep everyone safe on the tracks. Please check Twitter for photos.
Science Assembly
It was fantastic and all the children were engaged because of their superb delivery. The chemists wowed the children with their knowledge and also with extraordinary experiments, showing the children different chemical reactions and generating a real buzz for science. It was very inspirational insight into the world of science.
Online Safety
With the ever increasing use of internet and social media, online safety is a crucial part of our school’s curriculum. We ask for you to be mindful of this at all times and regularly check your child’s devices to ensure that they are using this responsibly. Christmas Charity Appeal
Dear parents and carers,
The pupils at our school have expressed an interest in creating a box of goodies to send to disadvantaged children and adults in Eastern Europe. We will be ordering the boxes from the Rotary Club (as they cater for all ages and have no religious or political affiliations), who deliver and collect directly to us. The cost of this is £2.00 per box. When the boxes arrive, we will be asking the children to fill them with unwanted toys and games in good condition, and toiletries, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. You can find more information on https://www.rotaryshoebox.org/.
Each year group will be creating boxes for different age ranges:
Reception and Year One – babies and toddlers
Year Two, Three and Four – primary age children
Year Five and Six – teenagers
Staff at school – adults
If your child would like to create a box, please could you pay £2 on Parent Pay, so they can participate?
Thank you for your support,
South Milford JLT
