PHES Teachers Present: Funny Things Kids Say
...a student that doesn't like coming to school, upon finding out how long it would take for his mom to become a teacher replied, "Okay, then I'll tell my mom and in four years, I'll do homeschool for the rest of my life." - Mrs. Randall
Talking about classroom rules a student interrupts me to say, "No interrupting!" (The irony) - Ms. Spence, Kinder
I called in sick the other day, and one student said that I was fired for not being at school - Ms. Felise
Yesterday, as I was teaching social skills to kindergarten, I was having the students stand up one at a time when I called their names to tell me their favorite food. Halfway through, when I called "Bobby", the cutest boy stood up and said, "My middle name is Bobby, but my first name is Peter. Peter Parker." I laughed as a girl in the class said, "No, it's not! His name is Bobby!" Then, without skipping a beat, he made the Spiderman shooters with his hands and "shot webs" at her. "My name is Peter Parker, and my favorite food is webs," he said. And sat down. I wanted to applaud. - Ms. Leininger, Counselor
I had a student tell me (after doing the Growth Mindset as a class - the whole class was showing me that they all had it memorized because they weren't looking at it), said...
"Yeah, I have it memorized. Yesterday, I was going to the bathroom and I had nothing to do, so I said the growth mindset while I was sitting on the toilet." I told him his mom would be so proud. :) - Mrs. Young, 5th Grade Teacher
Teacher to student: "that teacher is not here because she had someone close pass away". Student: "my dad passed away at work" (she meant that he was away for work). - Mrs. Williams
"Mr. K, you like football, and Mrs. Katsos is a P.E. teacher, is that why you guys are a thing?" (student to Mr. Katsos). - Ms. Smith, 5th Grade Teacher
Yesterday on the way out the door, a student turned to me and said, "Miss Wiley, it would be really fun to meet your house one day!" - Ms. Wiley, 3rd Grade Teacher
This Monday after going to the salon over the weekend, a couple of girls asked me if I dyed my hair. Before I could answer a boy said, “It’s KILLED her hair, not DIED her hair. You don’t “die” your hair, you kill it. (Blank stares from the girls) Then, another boy said, “Duh. Hair is already dead.” One of the girls chimed in, “You know what? We are just going to talk to Ms. Monique over here so you can’t hear us.” (Mansplaining in the early years…) - Mrs. Chapman, 4th Grade Teacher

What's for Lunch?
Introducing: Ms. Nagano's Social Skills Scoop
In the world, we need to be able interpret “why” and “how” situations happen and then respond appropriately to that information. By practicing Respect, we can improve communication and reduce misunderstandings when interacting with our community. This month's focus for 3rd grade is on practicing Respect by practicing perspective-taking.
Conversation Starters:
- What does Respect mean in your own words?
- Why do you think it is important to use perspective-taking when practicing Respect?

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the
one you can influence the most.
We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair® and experience a celebration of reading that
provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to
read every day so they can lead better lives.
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved
while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct
involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see
you there!
Book Fair Dates: September 12th-15th
Shopping Hours: Mon-Wed 3-5pm, Thursday 1:30-8pm
