"Be Committed, Be Consistent, Be Courageous"
Hello Phoenix Nation,
Amazing third week of school! Thank you to everyone for your hard work, focus, and commitment to creating a culture of excellence! Everyone doing well defining our high behavior expectations and holding scholars accountable for meeting and/or exceeding those expectations! Let’s continue to uphold our high behavior expectations while coaching scholars to develop habits and mindsets that will make them successful in college and in their adult lives.
As we continue to focus on instruction, let’s be sure that we’re defining our academic expectations and holding 100% of scholars to meet and/or exceed those expectations. To create scholar-centered classrooms we need to continually shift the thinking onto to scholars by requiring them to investigate, read, write, problem-solve, and discuss. To develop logical, rational, and critical thinking skills we always want to encourage scholars to communicate in complete thoughts. Please prompt, and hold scholars accountable, for communicating in complete thoughts while providing evidence and/or rationale to support their ideas. "Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better." - Pat Riley

Important Announcements and Information!
ESL: All ELA teachers must be ESL certified by October 31st. Getting ESL certified is not an option. If you have questions or concerns see your dean.
ESL Information: It’s time to reflect on the ELs in your classes! ELLevation will email you the information for adding your reflections into our online ESL database. Your insights help to establish which scholars need testing supports, which need small group intervention, and which are on track to progressing their English fluency. If you have any issues with ELLevation please email Mary Hawkins for support, mhawkins@uplifteducation.org .
Progress Reports: Grades for progress reports are due on August 26th. Grades will lock at 11pm. Each scholar should have a minimum of 4 grades in each subject.
Goal-setting meetings:
- Window 8/26th - 9/10th
- Calendared with your evaluator
- Approximately 30 min
- Set goals for the year
- Agree on coaching plan to achieve goals
Classroom Doors and Scholar Greeters: Doors are to remain unlocked during instructional time. You may lock your door when your room is empty. As our administrative team or guests enter your room, ensure that you have a scholar greeter prepared to greet guests. Scholar greeters should be able to introduce themselves and explain what class this is, grade level, and tell the guests what the class is working on. If your objective is up this should be an easy fix.
Seating Charts: Create a seating chart for each class period, including Advisory and ELT. When you’ve created a seating chart you can begin to learn scholars’ names and identify which scholars will need behavior and/or academic support. Seating charts can be alphabetical for right now, and you will be able to change them at any time.
Staff Tickets: Staff Tickets for Prizes is returning! All Leadership Team members will have tickets. Listed below are a few ways to earn tickets:

New Scholars: We will continue adding new scholars on Monday. Please give them and their families a warm Phoenix welcome. Reach out to Samantha if you have any questions. We will continue to add scholars until classrooms are filled or we reach our enrollment target.
Covering Classes: Using teacher planning time to cover classes will always be our last resort when we do not have sub coverage. When it does happen, we appreciate your flexibility and willingness to give up your planning time to make sure scholars receive appropriate lessons. When a classroom teacher covers another classroom during their planning time due to a shortage of subs, we will provide sub pay once you hit a full day of coverage.
Weekly Staff Huddles: UHMS Weekly Staff Huddles are on Fridays in the Secondary Library at 7:15am. Be on time.
Scholar Essential for the Week
Responding to Adults – Teach students to say “Yes ma‘am”, “No, Sir”, “No, Mr. Leonard” or “Yes, Ms. Thomas”. Just nodding their heads or any other form of yes or no is not acceptable here at UHMS. If you want students to respect you, let them know it and don’t accept anything less.
