What's In Your Toolbox?

Welcome Readers of the Socratic Forum Newsletter.

From the beginning of the year, our class has been acquiring and honing skills, aka tools, of which will be applicable to their academic lives this year and many years forward. Please take a moment to read the newsletter written and edited by the students. The content of each section is their reflection on some of the learning that they have experienced in class during the first quarter. Please feel free to leave appropriate comments at the bottom of the page for the students.

Cup Stacking

Together we did a project in Socratic Forum…the cup stacking challenge. We had 5 people in a group and we each held a string and they were all attached to a rubber band, so we could pick up the cups to build a tower!


We think this program was a success because we all learned how to work together and use new skills to solve a problem. We used a rubber band with strings tied to it to pull out and grab the cup to stack the tower. This was not working so we used a new method. Our method was slow, but the design was more practical. The teamwork process of this activity was fun.


We had to use teamwork for the cup stacking challenge. There were the 5 jelly fish tentacles which we try to hold one end and get it around the cup and then we would have to stack them in a pyramid. Doing this required a lot of patience and everyone had to participate, since if one person let go of the string, or if one wasn’t being used, then we wouldn’t of been able to move the cups. I think this teamwork building activity was pretty good.


There were many strategies and ideas that we used during this challenge. First, we had to listen to everyone and try everyone's ideas and see which ones were reasonable and which ones weren’t. Second, we had to communicate and tell everyone what to do and when to do it. Third, we had to be successful in terms of agreeing with each other and through communication.


All in all we thought this program was both very fun and productive and we learned a lot such as, teamwork, creative ideas, and problem solving skills.

Faulty Designs

While we were doing the faulty design, we used the 4 C's. The 4 C's are Communication, Critical thinking, Collaboration and Creativity. We were Communicating by explaining to each other what about the design was faulty and what would go wrong. We did Critical thinking by figuring out how we could fix the problem. We were Collaborating by working as a team to figure out what was right, and what was wrong. We were very Creative about thinking of new ways to fix the problem. That is how we used the 4 C's during the faulty design process. ( :

ENGINEERING AND DESIGN PROCESS

We used the engineering design process. We used it by finding something to use the steps in as an example. What we used was we had really cool ,good ideas like the solar powered plane and a submarine. These ideas led to the question " what steps did the projects take" and then we used the steps of the engineering and design process.

Finding Pros and Cons

What we did was, while we were trying to read, we were finding out what the pros and cons were. There were many pros and cons but we found out every single one. We also used the engineering design process to find out how we could improve on it. We used the "make it better" part of the engineer design process. That is how the EDP helped us find pros and cons.

Roles And Job Assignments

What we did to find jobs is if someone wanted to have this job we would let them have it, so everyone can do what they want. If two people wanted the same job they just worked it out so everyone can do what they want. : )

OneNote Notebook

Collaboration was very helpful because you could work together as a group on different computers and put your ideas together. It is also helpful because, everybody in your group can cooperate. For example one person can look up pictures, another can look up links and another could write. At the end everybody can put their own ideas on one page.


Working together online: As we are on one note, we could never do it alone! We needed to help each other out and WORK TOGETHER as a TEAM to figure out what was conflicting in our typing or anything.


On One note we used our difficulties of typing vs speaking and shared our ideas through the computer. Even though it was definitely a challenge throughout the whole entire process we had each other to learn from and build on! One note was a weakness at the beginning but by having each other it is now becoming a strength.


One note helped us to stay organized. It would allow us to work and see others work in collaboration space. We could see this in the 10 week check point. What we need to have.


One note helped us learn new things about tools to help us in the future about organization. It also helped us communicate electronically which I think is really cool. It helped us work as a team to think of ideas.


Communication was key while using one note because even while you were working in a group sometimes people got so into their computer that they would not communicate and then the whole group got messed up. Communication was so key because some people would only type to communicate and then when the group had to present they had a screen full of random typing because they were trying to communicate with the one person that wouldn’t look up from their computer messed up the whole group.


In conclusion one note was a weakness at first but in the end it turned out to be a big strength and helped us a lot in our group work

Engineering Design Process

Building new creations, organization, peer assessment, constructive criticism, time management, and project planning are all ways that the Engineering Design Process applies to many different activities.


Engineering design process (EDP) uses the four C’s. Communication is a big part because when you communicate results this could help others build off of what you have. Collaboration is also a big part of the EDP. We needed to collaborate by talking together about what we are going to do for our group projects.


Also, organization is also key when working in groups and using the EDP. It is important to stay organized while using the EDP. This is because if you are not organized you could lose all of your progress. You could also not get your projects done in time. Lastly you could let down your group if you lose your group papers.


Another thing we learned is many things about project planning with the Engineering Design Process. For example the EDP is a nice easy way to make a successful project. It makes any project simpler to make. Plus, we could get new ideas from looking back on all the other things we worked on before. We also know that the EDP is a skill you can use your whole life and is useful for many things. We learned that the project planning in the Engineering Design Process is very useful.


Finally, we used constructive criticism in many ways! One way was when we had to tell someone that their idea did not make sense to the problem, and if they were doing something wrong, we had to tell them.


Peer assessment is a good skill to know while using the EDP. It helps you evaluate your peers. When using peer assessment you should be honest and tell your group members what they do well and what they can do better next time.


As a result we learned the EDP can help me and you engineer different things. It also can help you with projects for school or anything. The EDP can basically help you with anything with time management, organization, project planning, peer assessments and constructive criticism. It also applies to other activities.

Multiple Intelligences

Multiple Intelligences helped us find our strengths and weaknesses. Multiple Intelligences also helped us learn the difference between intelligence and knowledge. Intelligence is if you are good with math problems and knowledge is when you know useful things.


Finding Strengths and weaknesses combined with self-discovery. Team building based on intelligences combined with multiple intelligences helped us to find what skills we need to work on and what we are good at. Also multiple intelligences have helped us build teams based on intelligences not just our best friends. We’ve found out based on experience that if you pick your friends you won't get much work done. So it's better when you pick teams based on intelligences so you can have a little bit of everything. For example, Mathematical, Musical, Linguistic etc.


Intelligence can help to find people different job assignments when they are on teams. Multiple intelligences helped us self-discover and find our strengths and weaknesses. Self-Discovery is very important because if you don't know much about yourself how would you know what collages you want to go to and what you want to do for a living.


Finding strengths and weaknesses, self-discovery, and difference between intelligence and knowledge. Multiple intelligence helped us to find our strengths and weaknesses so that we can overcome our weaknesses and improve our strengths, building teams based on intelligences, job assignment based on strengths. Multiple Intelligences helped us find what we are good at and what we need to work on.
