Beginning Band
January 1, 2020
Music can be a steady influence in your child’s life.
With winter break behind us, our focus turns toward spring and (eventually!) summer. The return to school in the winter months can often be challenging for students, when the dreary weather can be reflected in dreary attitudes, even for us teachers.
This time of year you may see your child’s interest in music wane a bit. Never fear! It is completely natural for your child’s enthusiasm to ebb and flow, at times with the season, and at times with other life factors.
Sometimes students need space, sometimes gentle guidance, to find their way back to the joy of making music.
What we — the adults in your child’s life — need to be mindful of are the root causes for a change in attitude. Is it peer pressure? School workload? Life events? The good news is that music can be the steadying influence in your child’s life. Remember, that your children most dislike the things that are good for them (i.e. going to bed on time, eating their vegetables, flossing, etc)… So if they are fighting you a little bit on practicing, take it as a sign that you are on the right path and stay strong!
I want you to know that my “door” is always open: Phone, email, or schedule a time to meet. If you notice a decline in your child’s interest in music, I’m here to help!
Sincerely,
M
This Week!
This week the students will be focusing on page 7 and will be performing from the "Standard of Excellence" Achievement Chart! If they didn't get all 3 boxes checked they can try again when we get back from break! Now that we are on break, this is the perfect time to relax, play, and enjoy family.
If the 5th graders want, encourage them to play for you and your family! I know a few that would love to any chance they can get!
The students talents are developing very well and with regular practice at home (70 minutes a week and see the video on practicing!) our March concert will be truly exciting!

Grading for 5th grade band
Every week, there will be 9 points per attendance, effort, and preparedness (can they play the assignments, did they bring all materials) and 10 points for practice logs.
I have questions! Who do I ask?
Required practice at home
Make sure a parent or guardian initials the practice journal to verify that yes, my child did practice. Have your kids show you the practice journal page!
PARENTS! We need your help and support on you child practicing! Make sure they have a proper space to practice and constantly encourage them! You will hear some "learning sounds" but it will get better! Ask them to play for you! Or, if you don't know anything about music, let them teach you!
Private Lessons are SO good for you!
