MISSION STATEMENT:
At Montclair WE strive to prepare students for future success by providing a healthy and safe environment where all students can be challenged, supported and engaged.
Leverty Letter
Dear Montclair Families,
Montclair hosted Picture Day last Thursday, January 28th and by all accounts it was a huge success. Parents/Guardians were excited to take part in an activity that provided some semblance of normalcy and students were eager to see one another, if even for a brief moment. Likewise, Karen, Sue and I were very happy to engage with families and see all of the smiling faces. We were encouraged by Picture Day and the prospect of returning to school this spring.
I want to acknowledge the many feelings swirling around with regards to the District’s return to school plan and projected return date. The uncertainty that has plagued our community, and the nation, has left an indelible mark on our emotions, and the pandemic is not yet over. It is certainly acceptable to feel emotions of anger, frustration, sadness with each new communication that comes forth, and I can attest that many families are also feeling joy, relief, and a sense of hope for our return to school plan. I want to validate everyone’s feelings, because we are all in this together. Our community has always had a very strong connections with the school, and I hope everyone knows that Montclair is here for you during these trying times. We want to applaud and celebrate the work that our families have done to support ongoing learning.
To prepare for our return to school date BSD is asking every currently enrolled family to decide whether they will remain in CDL or transition to in-person Hybrid. You may have already received the following BSD communique explaining the difference and offering directions for making your decision in ParentVUE. If you have not yet decided, please use the links below to make your decision by February 15th. Once the District knows how many will be remaining in CDL or attending in-person they can finalize staffing for those two learning environments.
Thank you,
Sean Leverty

Avid for 6th Graders!
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system in all Beaverton middle and high schools and includes the AVID elective class during the school day. Your feeder middle school is looking for 35 students to be enrolled in the AVID elective class for next year.
The AVID elective is a year-long elective class, taken in addition to the academic core classes (humanities, math, science, and other required courses) at your middle school. It is based on writing as a tool for learning, the inquiry method, reading, organization, and collaborative grouping. Your feeder school’s AVID elective teacher is looking for 35 students to be enrolled next year.
AVID students selected for the AVID elective are...
- In the “academic middle” – meeting standards in all subject areas and passing standardized tests, but need a little extra support to do better
- Needing help with study skills and organizational skills
- Motivated to go to college but don’t quite know how or have resources at home
- Willing to work hard and study every night
- Historically underrepresented in 4-year universities (first one in the family to attend college, students coming from economically challenging situations, students of color, etc.)
- Facing special circumstances that make it difficult for them to actualize their college dream
Students must apply and interview to be in the AVID elective class. For more information, please see attached document. For application materials, contact Anne Duncan at
firstname_lastname@beaverton.k12.or.us or 503-356-2190. For more information about the AVID elective class, contact your feeder middle school. Application is due March 19, 2021 and must be submitted online.

Behind the Scenes of the Montclair Library Bag System:
Every other week each Montclair student receives a bag from the Library with a collection of items selected just for them. Ever wonder how that happens? Tricia Dowling, Library Media Assistant has created a distribution system that has supported all Montclair students throughout this school year, and with the help of other staff members has been able to respond to the ongoing needs of each grade level. Each child has a spot designated in the Library for their supplies. Over the course of the week preceding pick up, Tricia collaborates with students/families via email to place library book request, as well as books of interest into that student's spot. Additionally, Tricia collaborates with teachers to organize and provides the necessary supplies, whether it is science kits, math manipulatives, etc. to go out in the Library bags. This communication and organization is key to Montclair's success and very time dependent. We appreciate the many ways that Tricia and other staff members help facilitate connections between school and home.

Helpful Hints for students using Chromebooks:
- Is your Chromebook slow? Holding the power button for 30 seconds to turn it off and then turning it back on can clear up many issues
- Did you know that many updates to your Chromebook happen when you log off your Chromebook or shut it down? If you are in the habit of just closing the Chromebook when you're done with your class, try logging out at the end of the day at least once a week so the updates can happen

Walk and Bike:
It’s Good for Your Heart! Whether you walk or bike a few blocks or over a mile, physical activity is good for your heart, your whole body and it’s fun! With colder winter weather, children spend less time playing outside, but a nice brisk walk or bike ride will help achieve their recommended 60 minutes daily exercise and help prevent childhood obesity and support healthy bones.
