What they do
Veterinarians care for the health of animals and work to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals.
Sick Animals
When an animal is sick, vets examine it to find out why. They look for clues in the way an animal looks, acts, and smells.
Healthy Animals
Veterinarians take their time to make sure these animals are healthy enough to continue living. Once an animal is all taken care of and healthy they are allowed to go back home with their owner.
Animal Treatment
Veterinarians treat different animals from all over the world, each animal with a different need. Depending on how hurt or sick an animal is, it may not survive. They specialize in a particular type of treatment, such as dentistry, pathology, surgery, microbiology, or internal medicine. Veterinarians collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine, or other body fluids for examination and analysis. They also have to research diseases to which animals could be susceptible and inspect animal housing facilities to determine their cleanliness and adequacy.
