"How America Met the Jews"

Hasia Diner

New York University

"How America Met the Jews" goes beyond banal invocations of either American freedom or Jewish virtues to explain both the magnetic draw of the United States for Jewish immigrants and the successes they experienced in their new home. How did American realities of color and race, immigration, religion, materialism, and politics shape the contours of that encounter?
