This Week's Theme: TYPES OF POWER
In 1959, John French and Bertram Raven conducted research into the Five Forms of Power. It attempted to determine what it is that makes someone powerful. Read on to see what these types of power mean for you and your leadership capabilities!
- Reward Power: is the ability to compensate for compliance. Problems can arise when you aren't able to offer rewards that are appealing to those whom you lead.
- Coercive Power: is the ability to punish for noncompliance. Coercive power is only good enough to get people to do the minimum required to avoid punishment.
- Legitimate Power: is when a person holds formal rights to make demands. The power is granted more because of the title that the person holds as opposed to the person themselves.
- Referent Power: is based on perceived worthiness or a right to respect. These people are simply well-liked by others. There is not necessarily any logical reason for having come to power.
- Expert Power: is based on superior skill and knowledge. This power is more likely to remain long after a specific project or task is completed.
Understanding what kind of power you have as a leader is a valuable lesson that can be used to better lead people. Most people have some combination of the five types of power.
What is your main source of power?
