Meet the "River Horse"
The hippopotamus is an animal that lives in Africa. When the ancient Greeks met the Hippo for the first time they called it the "River Horse". The hippo is the third largest land mammal behind the elephant and the rhino. Hippos can weigh up to 3 tons or 6,000 pounds.
Even though hippos are big they are still very fast. Hippos can run up to 19 miles per hour. Thats faster than most people can run. While the hippo is often looked at as cute, it is one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
Land and Water
Hippos live most of their lives in the water, but can also walk on land.
3,000 - 6,000 lbs
