Scott 6th Grade Center's Motto- "We Enter to Learn and Leave to Achieve"
Over the past couple months we have been reviewing expectations and reminding students about the reason they should be coming to school each day. At staff meetings, teachers and staff worked to create different mottos that captured our mission. We have finally narrowed it down and chosen our motto. At Scott 6th Grade Center, we enter to learn and leave to achieve. Students will be hearing this motto every morning on the announcements, and Mr. Handerhan has volunteered to paint it in our hallways. We are hoping that with a motto we all know and understand, students and staff will be able to focus on the reason we are at school each day- to learn and achieve great things!
Dr. VanVooren Visited Scott
On Thursday morning, our new Superintendent, Dr. VanVooren, visited Scott. Two of our Student Council members, Emmanuel Gonzalez and Naadirah Bryant, took her for a tour of our building. Dr. VanVooren stopped in many classrooms to meet our students and staff. She had a wonderful time and is looking forward to visiting again soon.

County Science Fair
Last Tuesday, March 7th, five young scientists from Scott participated in the Chester County Science Research Competition. After strong performances at the school and district fairs, they were eager to present their research to judges and scientists from the community at the county level. Harlow Stover, Carrigain Eschborn, and Emma-Lynn Beam all represented Coatesville well with their projects. Two more of our very own Scott students, Colby Palomeque and Stanley Michalski, were selected as award recipients and will be honored at an upcoming ceremony. Congratulations to all for your efforts!

We Need Your Feedback
We are in the process of creating strategic actions for the 2023-2024 school year. Your input is important. These plans act as a guide to how we identify priority areas that we will focus on during the next school year. This survey is one step in a process of continuing improvement to ensure we are creating goals, planning professional learning, and have resources that are aligned with our vision and mission and meeting the needs for all our students.
In the following survey, you will be asked questions in multiple areas. If a question is not relevant to your situation or setting, please select the “Does not apply” option. We hope that you will take the time between now and March 13th to complete the survey.

Expectations and Responsibilities of Students
Our highest priority here at Scott is educational achievement and in order for that learning to occur students and staff need to feel safe and respected.
In our code of conduct it states,
All students are expected to:
- Support everyone's right to learn
- Choose ways to resolve conflict without fighting
- Accept others for who they are and respect differences
- Show proper respect for:
- Themselves
- Other students
- Adults
- School property
- Personal property
Student responsibilities include regular attendance, conscientious effort in classroom work and homework, and conformance to school rules.
No student has the right to interfere with the education of fellow students. It is the responsibility of each student to respect the rights of teachers, students, administrators and all others who are involved in the educational process.
Students should express their ideas and opinions in a respectful manner.
Students should exercise proper care when using public facilities and equipment.
Students should not use obscene language in student media or on school premises.
All staff and students at Scott have the right to feel safe and respected. We continue to reinforce our expectations for behavior and achievement while students are at the building. Please continue to discuss the expectations for success here at school with your student. I appreciate your support.
Dress Code Reminder
As we start to experience warmer days, I want to take the time to remind students and families of our dress code. Please make sure students are dressed appropriately for school. Shorts, dresses and skirts should not be very short. Students may not wear clothing where the midriff is visible or clothing with only spaghetti straps or tube tops. Please look at the ripped jeans your student may be wearing to school to make sure too much skin is not showing. Head coverings of any kind are also prohibited in all school buildings, and students will be asked to remove them. We want students to feel comfortable at school, but it is important to be school appropriate as well.
Generally, students violating the dress code will be sent to an administrator. Students will be sent home after parental contact is made or the parent must bring in a change of clothes. (Our nurse does try to keep extra clothes around for students to use if needed as well. If you have any extra clothes that you could send in to school, I know Nurse Keenan would appreciate the ability to restock! )
Continued violation of the Student Dress & Grooming Policy will be regarded as insubordination and the student may be suspended.
Please refer to the Dress Code which is mentioned in the Secondary Code of Conduct starting on page 31 if you have any questions or concerns.
Student Responsibility for Chromebook
New chromebooks and chargers were distributed to all students at Scott.
If your student lost their chromebook, our technology department will be reaching out to you about the $240 fee to replace the chromebook.
If you have paid the TIF this year, it will carry over to this chromebook. If you have not yet paid the TIF for the school year, please do by clicking on this link. https://coatesvillearea.revtrak.net/casd-technology/
Please click on this link to sign the 1:1 agreement.
1:1 Student & Parent/Guardian Agreement (office.com)
As a reminder, this chromebook will be your student's responsibility until the end of 8th grade when it will be collected back. Although the chromebook is in your student's possession, please remember that it is school district property and should be treated responsibly. We will continue to teach our students the proper care for their technology. I appreciate your support in speaking with your child about treating the chromebook with care. (We already have students that have lost their new ones).

Nurse's Corner
Just a couple reminders to families:
- Students should not be contacting families to be picked up when they are not feeling well. Students need to be assessed by the nurse and calls home will be made as needed. If families want to be called each time their student comes to the nurse, please email Ann Keenan, school nurse (keenana@casdschools.org). It is not standard practice to call home for non-urgent matters.
- Emergency Health Forms were sent home (lime green). If you did not complete the Emergency Health Information online, you must complete the paperwork and return it to the school nurse.
- Covid 19 is still causing illness and absences. Please continue to test and take precautions to avoid further spread. 5 days of isolation followed by 5 days of well-fitting masks is the current CDC guideline. (see below).
- The school nurse will be starting health screenings (Vision, Growth and Scoliosis). If your student has glasses, please make sure they have them for school.
