INVOLVING STUDENTS IN THEIR LEARNING
For people of all ages, getting engaged in the learning process helps us learn at a deeper level. This can be in the form of hands on activities, group projects, collaborative learning conversations, and a variety of other methods. It's important for our students to be engaged and involved in their learning.
At GHVHS, our students are given so many opportunities to do just that, both in the classroom and in the community.
Check out the details below.
HUBER SUPPLY WELDING EXPO
On Friday Sept. 9, Mr. Omans and our Metals and Equipment Refinishing students attended the annual Huber Supply Welding Expo. Students were able to meet with industry professionals and representatives from top welding supply and tool companies. Lincoln Welders and Esab Welders both had hands on displays in MIG, Stick, TIG welding as well as plasma and oxy-fuel cutting. Lincoln Electric also had their latest co-bot welder set up and demonstrated the advantages of this technology versus traditional robotic welding.
Students also had the opportunity to talk to reps from Milwaukee Tools. They had almost their entire line of hand held power tools to see and handle. There were many other companies representing abrasives, metal cutting saws, safety gear and more. Everyone also got a free lunch, ice cream, cotton candy, pop and popcorn. A few students won some big prizes in the raffle. Erik Baumgard took home a Miller 211 MIG welder, Jace Hendrikson and Nate Marshall each took home full welding gear sets. (pictured above). The total value of the prizes was more than $3000!
ALL-STATE CLINIC AT WALDORF
This past Thursday, some of our GHV musicians attended an All-State Clinic at Waldorf University. Students from North Central Iowa and as far as the Des Moines area gathered to work on their music.
Instrumental students got to work one-on-one or in small groups with experts in their instruments, including former GHV Band Director Mr. Jolivette.
Choir students worked with Dr. Bertram from Waldorf and various music teachers in small sectionals.
Students came away with a great musical experience, more confidence in their All-State work, and plenty of pointers that will help them as auditions draw closer and closer.
CROSS COUNTRY - SUCCESS AT CLEAR LAKE
Our cross country teams competed in Clear Lake this past Thursday, and many of our runners had a great night.
Katelyn Knoll placed 5th with a time of 21:42.56. Pictured above is Katelyn and the Top 10 medal winners.
In addition to these top 15 placements, several students told me Friday that they ran well and felt good about their times.
