"Achieving Our Dreams through Education"
Thanksgiving Season is upon us
We are now in the Thanksgiving season. Studies have found that having a thankful disposition is a great benefit to our personal lives. Practicing the attitude of gratitude also brings great peace of mind and heart. I tell my children and students that this time of year is a time we are reminded to be thankful and to take the best that the holiday and season offers; which to me is family, fun and of course food.
As an educator and an indigenous person I am always very careful not to repeat falsehoods about this time of year, as my children and the student we serve are American Indian. I do not want to perpetuate the myth of the “1st Thanksgiving.” It is important to approach this topic with sensitivity by keeping in mind the age and developmental stage of our students. If you are interested in more information abut this there are tons of resources online and the book "Lies My Teacher Told Me," by James Loewen is a good source. There is an entire chapter dedicated to this topic of Thanksgiving, pilgrims and ect, as well as the true story of Squanto.
So what do I recommend this season? I recommend focusing on the good virtues of the Thanksgiving Holiday and tradition such as being thankful and enjoying family and teaching kids to acknowledge who and what they are thankful for. I recommend being aware of the student body that we serve and eating as much turkey, cranberry sauce, yams, stuffing and pumpkin pie as we can. I do not recommend making paper war bonnets and paper Native Americans and other activities that are not culturally sensitive. But do not be afraid of celebrating and being thankful with your students, some of my earliest school memories are filled with creating paper turkeys.
