Looking Ahead at November
Bathroom Closures and Re-Opening
Many of you are aware that recently we had a number of incidents of vandalism at AHS. One incident included damage to plumbing and infrastructure that cost thousands of dollars to fix. We have had other incidents that involve soap dispensers being repeatedly broken, mirrors broken and other damage. In an effort to prevent future vandalism, AHS administration took action to temporarily close the affected bathrooms.
See Something, Say Something
In an effort to empower our students, most of whom are respectful of property and use the bathrooms appropriately, we have started a campaign through our Leadership class called “See Something, Say Something.” We have a tip-line that students can text to alert school officials whenever they see destructive or unsafe behavior on campus. The number is: 541-951-2045.
We will begin reopening bathrooms in this order:
11/15 Monday – Lower Commons Bathrooms and 3rd floor Humanities Bathrooms
11/22 Monday – Upper Commons Bathrooms and the Gym Lobby Bathrooms
The openings are contingent upon no new significant vandalism.
We are sorry that the actions of a few caused an inconvenience for so many. We have confidence that all students will treat their school with respect moving forward.
Important Information - Street Closure and Student Pickup 11/23
ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS
South Mountain will be closed for Truth to Power's Mural Dedication Ceremony on November 23rd. As a result, parking will be impacted all day and end-of-day pick-up will be re-located.
Students who drive themselves to/from school
You will not be able to park on South Mountain at any time on 11/23.
If you park in the Iowa St. lot, you will not be able to leave between 2:45 and 3:30.
Students who ride the bus home from school
You will be picked up PROMPTLY after school at the corner of Iowa and South Mountain, just across the street from the usual pick-up spot on the bus ramp. BUSSES WILL BE LEAVING QUICKLY, SO DO NOT DALLY.
Students who get a ride home
Drivers should plan a place to meet their students after school OTHER THAN on South Mountain or Iowa. We recommend Morse St., Titus Alley using the turnaround by the gym, or the pull-outs on the south side of Siskiyou.
Mural Dedication Ceremony & Celebration
Join Truth to Power club as they dedicate the BIPOC of the Rogue Valley Celebration Mural in honor of Aidan Ellison and celebrate the artists and activists of our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color community.
Date: November 23
Time: 4:30 PM-7:30 PM
Location: 201 S Mountain Ave, Ashland, OR 97520, USA

College & Career Pathways: Resources for Students and Families
Please check out the many resources available to help AHS students and their families explore college and career pathways on the AHS College & Career Center page. There you will find a lot of helpful information, including the link (at the top of the page) to the calendar of upcoming visits with college admissions counselors!
In the past month, students have had the chance to connect with representatives from Lewis & Clark, SOU, College of Idaho, Northern Arizona University, Reed, Central Oregon Community College, Cal Poly – SLO, and Willamette University. These info sessions are great opportunities for students of all ages to learn more about what different colleges have to offer! In the next few weeks, AHS has visits scheduled with University of Oregon, Whitman, Lawrence, Vassar, Corban, Pacific and Seattle University! The AHS college visit calendar is updated on a weekly basis, so please check the AHS College & Career Center page regularly to see which schools have been added! This is a direct link to the current calendar.
Jen Marsden (AHS College & Career Specialist) and our AHS counselors are always available to help students explore college and career pathways, and to assist in navigating the college admissions and financial aid process. Students and parents/guardians are encouraged to reach ou to jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us or their AHS counselor with questions or to schedule an appointment. Please take a few minutes to learn more about upcoming info sessions (and recordings), the AHS College Handbook, ACT/SAT updates, ASPIRE and other helpful resources described below.
Important FINANCIAL AID INFO for Senior Families!!!
Students have had the opportunity to complete their portion of the 2022-23 FAFSA in their CCR classes. There is also a parent section of the FAFSA, where the student’s parent(s) need to provide demographic and financial information. The 2022-2023 FAFSA went live October 1st and will use tax information from 2020. If not familiar with FAFSA, senior parents are strongly encouraged to watch this recording of the Financial Aid 101 info session to learn more about how to complete the application! If students or parents do not have social security numbers, please contact Jen Marsden so she can provide guidance on how to fill out the FAFSA without an SSN and information on ORSAA, an alternative financial aid form. Please reach out to jennifer.marsden@ashland.k12.or.us with questions or for help on any financial aid applications.
Upcoming College & Career Pathways Info Sessions: All sessions will be on zoom from 5:30 - 6:30 pm and can be accessed at the following link: https://asdconnect-org.zoom.us/j/97711618881. The sessions will be recorded and available on the AHS YouTube Channel, where you can already find info session recordings from last year.
Wednesday, November 3, Community College Opportunities and Pathways: Community colleges offer an extensive array of professional training programs in fields such as Mechanics, Electronics, Culinary Arts, Massage Therapy, Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy, Graphic Design and more! Students can also complete general education credits at a community college, receive a two-year A.A or A.S degree and then transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. Learn more about these potential college and career pathways and how to access them! There will also be an overview of the Oregon Promise grant and other financial aid and scholarships available to AHS students.
Wednesday, December 8, Scholarships and Financial Aid: AHS counseling staff will provide information on scholarship opportunities for AHS seniors, including tips on how to complete the online OSAC Scholarship E-app and the AHS Local Scholarships applications. Counselors will present scholarship information first, and then discuss and answer questions about financial aid, including FAFSA and CSS completion, for parent/guardians and students who would like to stay for more information on those applications. This meeting is important if students plan to attend a private/public university, community college or trade school, and are interested in finding funds to pay for school.
Recording of College Pathways 101 9/14/2021: Overwhelmed by the thought of planning for college? AHS counseling staff will present information on college pathways, specifically geared toward junior and senior students and their families. Topics covered will include a general overview of the process of applying to both community colleges and four-year universities, ACT/SAT testing, and how to access financial aid/scholarships.
Recording of Financial Aid 101 9/29/2021: Learn about the pathways to access financial aid and scholarships! We will discuss the process for completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), an online application which qualifies students to receive the Federal Pell Grant, the Oregon Opportunity Grant, the Oregon Promise, and government loans. Even if you think your family will not qualify for federal financial aid, it is important to complete the FAFSA. Many colleges will not give students merit aid unless they have a FAFSA on record. We will also briefly cover the CSS Profile, a separate online application many private schools use to determine institutional financial aid.

ACT and SAT Updates
Students planning on applying to four year colleges usually take ACT/SAT tests in spring of junior year and/or fall of senior year. See below for all 2021-22 test dates at AHS. If AHS has no more seat availability, students can look for open testing sites in Medford and Grants Pass. Many colleges are now “test optional” and Oregon’s public universities no longer require ACT/SAT test results for admission, but some do for eligibility for honors colleges or merit scholarships. Check individual universities for current guidelines.
Students register for the ACT and SAT online and those who qualify for free/reduced lunch are eligible for fee waivers for both tests. Please contact karyn.barats@ashland.k12.or.us to obtain a fee waiver.
2021-22 AHS Test Dates (registration deadlines are about one month before the test dates):
