Notes from the Administration

THANK YOU to all the students and families who came to Frederick High to see our Whittier play, "We Are Monsters!" The play was fantastic and really showcased the hard work of all of our performers!

Schools are required to hold fire drills and safety drills throughout the school year. This past week we held a severe weather drill. We do not typically send out a Find First Notice when we've completed a drill. This week we will be practicing a lock down drill.

April is Month of the Military Child

Thank you to all of our students whose family members serve in our military. April is Month of the Military Child. In addition to our Superhero Day on April 11th, students are encouraged to wear purple in honor of our military children.

WHES is hosting a Military Appreciation Dinner on Thursday April 11th from 6:30-8:00.

National Library Week (April 8-12th)

MD Black-Eyed Susan Reading Program: Our students from K-5 are reading all 15 books on the MD Black-Eyed Susan Picture Book Nominee List in library with Ms. Dattoli and will be voting for their own favorite book in the next two weeks! Last year's Whittier winner was Ida, Always and the state winner was The Best Frints in the Whole Universe. This year's list has challenged us to make a difference, to be a friend and to dare to dream. Here is the list of nominees: http://maslmd.org/2018-2019-black-eyed-susan-book-award-nominees/ As soon as all of the Whittier votes are counted, they will be sent to Annapolis where all of the votes from all over MD will be counted. The books with the most votes will become the 2018-2019 MD Black-Eyed Susan Picture Book Winner. Stay tuned for our school results!

On May 16th, 2019, we are hosting our annual Career Day for our 5th grade students and we need your help! We are looking for individuals who are passionate about their careers to come and share your life’s work with our wonderful students. Each year, our 5th graders get to explore a variety of career choices they might have never considered, broadening their interests and sparking their curiosity in career exploration. Each speaker will be given a sheet of talking points and will speak for five, 20 minute sessions. If you are able to participate in this great day, please reach out to our School Counselors, Carleigh Rich or Lisa Reese at 240-236-3135 for more details. Thank you!

If you appreciate all the activities sponsored by the PTA and feel you might be up for the challenge of serving in a capacity while also being an active member at WHES, please consider taking a role on the PTA Executive Board for the 2019-2020 school year. Whittier has a strong and active PTA and the executive board plans many activities that enrich the lives of our children and teachers during the school year. If you are interested in running for a position, please contact Amanda Cecil. You will need to provide a brief bio about yourself and let us know the position you are running for. This has been an active year for the PTA but the incoming executive board sets the standard for each year with regards to pace and activities, so as a group you get to decide how many activities you take on. The current board will also help you transition into your roles with any assistance and guidance over the summer. The PTA general membership meeting on May 20th, 6:30pm at Whittier will be the evening where each PTA member will vote on the incoming board officers. Please come prepared to vote for the officers listed as well as catching up on brief updates from activities for the past school year. The PTA meeting is a great way to meet other parents just like you, engage with teachers, and to listen to all of the achievements of the school year. We highly recommend attending the PTA meeting just to see how much the PTA does during the school year.
