From the Principal's Desk
Warm Winter Greetings!
I hope you have been staying warm in the cold weather and that your winter break was enjoyable! Please be sure to review the BCPS inclement weather policy below.
I wanted to update you on our International Baccalaureate candidacy. Wellwood had our IB Verification visit in December. IB personnel spent two days in our building and saw the amazing work our students and teachers do every day. We will receive feedback regarding our visit in March or April. I will keep you informed as information is shared with me.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

In addition, pending Maryland State Board of Education approval, Baltimore County public schools and offices will be open on Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 17, to make up for the school system’s emergency closure of schools on December 16, 2019. This change is in accordance with the 2019-2020 school calendar and the planned use of emergency closure make-up days.

Key Concepts
Key Concepts are powerful ideas that have relevance within the subject areas but also transcend them. Students must explore and re-explore the concepts in order to develop a coherent, in-depth understanding.
The eight key concepts our students focus on are:
Form- What is it like?
Function- How does it work?
Causation- What is it like it is?
Change- How is it changing?
Connection- How is it connected to other things?
Perspective- What are the points of view?
Responsibility- What is our responsibility?
Reflection- How do we know?
Transdisciplinary skills are capabilities that students need to demonstrate to succeed in a changing, challenging world.
Ask your student which concepts they are studying in class!

IB PYP Coordinator

Brrrr……
Another option is to down load the free app “BCPS Now” on your smartphone to be informed of the latest operating status of schools in Baltimore County. It is important that we keep the school phone lines open for communication, so please do not call school.
This is also an appropriate time to review procedures with your child in case schools close early. In addition, if your child has a change of clothes at school, this is a good time to swap out the clothes so that they match the colder weather.
Inclement Weather Policies
All Schools-Closed for the Entire Day
In the event of bad weather and very hazardous road conditions throughout the county, all schools may be closed for the entire day. Every effort will be made to have such an announcement given over the radio and television, Twitter, Facebook and the BCPS phone app by 5:30 am. (If on an inclement morning no announcement is made over local stations or social media, it is to be assumed that schools will be open as usual.)
All Schools-Late Opening
When weather conditions are such that it appears extremely hazardous to operate schools at the regular early morning hours but that traveling conditions will improve later in the morning, the opening of schools may be delayed one or two hours. In addition to delaying bus schedules, it may be necessary to temporarily alter certain bus routes.
If school opens later than usual, please make sure that your child does not arrive before the announced opening time. We are unable to provide supervision prior to the school day.
• If schools are delayed one hour, Wellwood will open its doors at 10:05 AM.
• If schools are delayed two hours, Wellwood will open its doors at 11:05 AM.
News from the Nurse
Yes, it might be January but it's not too late for you and your child to get a flu shot. Flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. Common symptoms of the flu include high fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, chills, sore throat, exhaustion and dry cough. Children may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
You have the power to protect yourself and your family this season with these three actions to fight flu.
- Get a flu vaccine. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. A yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu.
- Take everyday actions to stop the spread of germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often with soap and water. If your child becomes sick, have him/her stay home to keep from infecting other children. Children should remain home until they have been fever free for at least 24 hours.
- Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. If you get the flu, medicine, called antiviral drugs, can be used to treat flu illness. Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications.

Green School
Our Wellwood students have been working hard to compost in our cafeteria! Thanks to our years of environmental education efforts, Wellwood was chosen as one of three schools to pilot a composting program in partnership with Veteran’s compost. In November, Wellwood students composted 2,550 pounds of food! That is food we are saving from taking up space in our local landfills and is being put to good use. Make sure to ask your student what they are composting each day at school!
Wellwood’s Green School committee is collecting empty/used ink cartridges and Coke product codes. The first picture below shows some examples of what is being collected.
Wellwood is also collecting used or damaged sneakers or tennis shoes. These will be recycled through a shoe recycling program. We are also collecting plastic bags. Please see the document below.
