Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
It was so great having so many of you here at school this week for parent-teacher conferences! Your involvement in your child's education through meetings like this, attendance at school workshops, establishing homework routines, and monitoring the Parent Portal go a long way toward ensuring your child's success. Thank you for partnering with us to put kids first! As always, if I can be of assistance to you in any way, please reach out.
Please mark your calendar for my next Coffee Talk on February 27 at 9:00. This is an informal opportunity for us to chat and explore any questions or ideas you may have. Even if nothing particular is on your mind, I love having the opportunity to just talk and get to know you better. I hope to see you then!
I hope you have a great weekend!
Your Principal and Partner,
Dr. Pendleton

Students should also consider what they can personally do to help create a world without hate, and who inspires them to work towards this goal.
How: Through original written or artistic expression (essays, poetry, short stories, screen plays, videos, drawings, paintings, photography, collage and computer art)
When: Students create and submit entries through mail by March 13, 2020. Please pick up an entry form from outside your counselors' door.
Why: Because we are counting on YOU to make our communities no place for hate!
Pick up entry forms outside Ms. Marantz and Ms. Penland's door. If you need the school to mail your entry for you, please turn it in by March 12.

PTO News
Thanks to all who braved the rainy weather Tuesday to join us for a great PTO spirit night at Chick-Fil-A!
Bingo Night Sponsorship: If you or a family member or friend owns a business that would like to donate items for our annual Bingo Night, please have them contact us at info@blespto.org
Mark your calendar for the PTO membership meeting on March 20 at 5:00 prior to Bingo Night. If you have a child attending BLES, you’re a member! PTO stands for Parent Teacher Organization. That means you have an important voice! Come to our meeting for a view of what happens at our School Council, Parent Advisory Council and Title I Planning meetings, give your input for 2021 planning and see the proposed slate of officers for next year.
We have an immediate need for a secretary for the remainder of this year. Serving in that position now is a great way to get to know the PTO in preparation for next year’s planning process. Email info@blespto.org for more information or visit our website.
Get ready for Dollar Donut Days each Friday in March*! The PTO will serve Krispy Kreme donuts in the lobby from 7:45 – 8:10. They only cost $1 and proceeds go to help the school for things like cultural arts programs, teacher supplies reimbursements. Visit this site to see volunteer needs and sign up to help. (* We will sell donuts on Thursday, March 12, instead of Friday, March 13, due to the 13th being an inclement weather day/holiday.)
Have great ideas for a FUNdraiser? We have a lot, too. We just need someone to lead one for the spring. The spring fundraiser helps the PTO go into 2021 planning with an appropriate budget to account for 2021 events like STEM Night, Field Day and Bingo Night.
GCPS - District News You Can Use
Duluth High School Theater Performance
Berkeley Lake families are invited to attend Duluth High School's play, “Wiley and the Hairy Man” on Friday, February 21 or Saturday, February 22. Both shows start at 7:00 PM in the DHS theater.
All seats are $10 each and can be purchased at the door beginning at 6:00 pm. Theater doors will open at 6:30 pm.
This drama is a spine-tingling tale of a boy and his worst fears in the swamp—eventually overcome by Wiley himself. Set deep within the mysterious Tombigbee Swamp, Wiley and the Hairy Man centers around a young fatherless boy, his conjure-woman mother, his faithful dog, and the Hairy Man who haunts Wiley's days and dreams. Through rhythm and rhyme, a chorus creates the mystery of the swamp. The magic of this play is not fairy dust, it is soil—the magic of survival, the magic of the earth and the mud of the swamp. In an exciting duel of wits, Wiley learns to rely upon his own resources and conquers two villains: the Hairy Man and his own fear.

Digital Learning Days
The Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) 2019-2020 school calendar includes two make-up days to address school days missed due to inclement weather. In addition to these days, GCPS also has the option of making up days missed due to inclement weather using Digital Learning Days.
A Digital Learning Day is considered a school day, so students will be accountable for completing the teacher assignments from home, just as they would do at school. The assignments will be found on the teacher’s eClass course page under the Digital Learning Day icon and will be checked by the teacher and considered in the grading process.

We Have a School Store
Berkeley Lake Recycles
Berkeley Lake recycles aluminum cans and old clothes and shoes (in any condition) in the two bins in the upper parking lot. The Green Team receives 10¢ per pound of donations, which helps pay the fee for the weekly paper and cardboard pick-up. The aluminum cans are recycled at Progressive Recycling on Simpson Circle. Please support our Green Team by recycling these items here at Berkeley Lake. Thank you!
Remember to Save Those Box Tops!
One easy way to support your school is through the PTO Box Tops for Education collection. Send in Box Tops from products you purchase. To help with counting, you can download this Box Tops Collection Sheet.
Make sure to put your Box Tops on the sheet or in a bag with your name and teacher on it. Drop it into the wooden box in the main hallway near the water fountain. Doing this automatically enters you into a contest.
Each month, we’ll hold a random drawing of all students who submit Box Tops. Winners will be announced on the morning announcements at the end of each month. The prize? A coupon for a free ice cream or an item from the student store. This fundraiser has helped us earn hundreds of dollars for our school!
Our Parent Center
The Berkeley Lake Parent Center is open each day from 7:30-3:30. The Parent Center is located across from the front office. For Parent Center support please call Ms. Sandra Orci, Parent Liaison, at 678-291-4232.
