If most of your answers fell into the first category, chances are that your child has the flu. If your answers were usually in the second category, it's most likely a cold.
But don't be too quick to brush off your child's illness as just another cold. The important thing to remember is that flu symptoms can vary from child to child (and they can change as the illness progresses), so if you suspect the flu, call the doctor. Even doctors often need a test to tell them for sure if a person has the flu since the symptoms can be so similar!
Some bacterial illnesses, like strep throat or pneumonia, also can look like the flu or a cold. It's important to get medical attention immediately if your child seems to be getting worse, is having any trouble breathing, has a high fever, has a bad headache, has a sore throat, or seems confused.
Teaching Assistant Spotlight
Mrs. Syron grew up in Palmyra NY. After high school, she earned an associate's degree in Business Management and a certificate in Early Childhood Education. She knew she always wanted to work with kids, even as a small child. She started out working as a nanny for a family in Florida in 2006. After moving back to New York State, she got a position as a toddler teacher, and absolutely loved working with that age group for almost 8 years! She met her husband, Todd, and had their beautiful little girl, Mackenzie. After she was born, she wanted to spend as much time as possible with her family. That led her to Perkins! This is her second year as a Teaching Assistant and she really enjoys working with a lot of different kids and also having the ability to have more family time.

Math Can Be Fun!
Math doesn’t have to be a struggle for children even if it isn’t their favorite subject. Here are some ways you can help your child to practice math and have fun at the same time:
· When shopping, let your child help you compare costs to find the best deal. You can also practice estimating to keep track of money when shopping.
· Measure things and talk about the differences in measurement. You can use measuring with a small ruler or when cooking.
· Ask your child questions that involve counting. Here is a link that will give you ideas for counting activities: https://www.education.com/activity/counting/
· Look for word problems in real life. Example: “I had 12 eggs before breakfast and now I have 8. How many eggs did I use to cook breakfast?”
· Play a mystery number game. “I’m thinking of a number between 5 and 8 that is even.” Mystery numbers can grow in complexity as students get older.
For more ideas about how to help your child practice math skills, feel free to contact his/her teacher. Have fun practicing math!
Please remember to bring sneakers for gym. With it being the winter months and the kids wearing boots, they still need to have their sneakers for PE!!!

Cheryl Robbins
Mrs. Robbins graduated high school from Gananda and currently lives outside of Penfield. She lives with her husband, Greg, and two children, Mila (4 1/2) and Camden (2).
After high school, Mrs. Robbins went to college at the University at Buffalo where she got her degree in communication and journalism. After deciding to switch life paths, she went for her Master’s degree in early childhood and childhood education at Buffalo State College, graduating in 2012. Mrs. Robbins has been teaching in Newark since 2012 and has taught both 3rd and 1st grades, where she currently teaches now. She is thankful for the teachers and students that keep her laughing and becoming a better teacher!
You can always find Mrs. Robbins at Target shopping (for things she probably doesn’t need)! She loves spending time with Camden and Mila. She is a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan and was devastated with the play-off loss this year (trust the process)!

A Message from Mrs. Underhill
In January, our classrooms competed to show their Pride in their special area classes and in the cafeteria. I was able to enjoy ice cream with our winning classes: Mrs. James and Ms. Schilstra's kindergarten class, Mrs. Powell's first grade class and Mrs. Bittner and Mrs. Meek and Mrs. VanDemortel's classes tied in second grade.
In February, you may have seen your child with a sticker, "Ask Me How I Showed My Pride?" This was a great opportunity for our Perkins students to be recognized for individual acts of #PerkinsPride and then be able to tell their parents and other teachers, "I showed my Pride by being safe in the hallway" or "I was a member of my community by cleaning up my classroom." Students were so proud to share their Pride with all of us!
Next, we will be learning about what #PerkinsPride looks like on our school buses. Before our afternoon farewell, students will be learning about what safe, respectful, responsible and a community look like on our buses.
You may have noticed we have a new School Resource Officer working in the Newark Schools. Deputy Vaughn started in January and although he spends most of his time at the High School and Middle School, you may have seen him at Perkins too. We want our students to know that Deputy Vaughn is a member of our school community. I've seen many parents surprised to see law enforcement on our campus, so I wanted to assure you that Deputy Vaughn is here to build positive relationships with our students and families.
