- NEW: i-READY
K-12 Core Four
Shared Vocabulary: Shout Out
- Focus Standards
- Supporting Standards
- Standards Extension Manual
Standards should either play a starring role or a supporting role in each grade level or course. Here's how to distinguish the two:
- Focus Standards are "a carefully selected subset of the total list of the grade-specific and course-specific standards within each content area that students must know and be able to do by the end of each school year in order to be prepared for the standards at the next grade level or course. Focus standards represent the assured student competencies that each teacher needs to help every student learn, and demonstrate proficiency in, by the end of the current grade or course" (Ainsworth, 2013, p. xv).
- Supporting Standards are "those standards that support, connect to, or enhance the Priority Standards. They are taught within the context of the Focus Standards, but do not receive the same degree of instruction and assessment emphasis as do the Focus Standards. The supporting standards often become the instructional scaffolds to help students understand and attain the more rigorous and comprehensive Priority Standards" (Ainsworth, 2013, p. xv).
Prioritizing certain standards over others does not mean eliminating those standards that do not make it into the starring roles. All standards must be taught and assessed, and re-taught and reassessed, to gain evidence of student competency of those learning outcomes. Prioritizing the standards has nothing whatsoever to do with "lowering the bar," and everything to do with focus. It is about "less" being more. The difference is in the degree of focus given to certain standards over others.

Ask, "what is the standard?"
FOCUS STANDARD:
Student develops an
understanding of what plants and
animals (including humans) need
to survive and the relationship
between their needs and where
they live.
"What are the nouns or the concepts being taught?
Student develops an

What are the verbs or the skills?

GETTING TO KNOW STEMSCOPES: Video for KIPS Teachers
The What and Why of iReady!
iReady is an adaptive diagnostic for reading and mathematics which pinpoints student needs down to the sub-skill level.
- iReady shows whether students are on track to achieve end-of-year targets.
- iReady uses data to personalize learning and lesson plan by the teachers
- iReady meets the need of every student
- iReady uses the results for teacher planning in order to best meet the needs of each student.
- iReady is not a “high-stakes” test and the results are not factored into student grade
- The iReady scores are just one piece of a student’s profile
- iReady is used to monitor student growth throughout the year and to estimate understanding of standards
What are computer-adaptive tests?
iReady is a computer-adaptive test (CAT). Computer-adaptive tests continually adjust the difficulty of each test by determining each question based on the previous response. If a student answers correctly, the difficulty level of the next item increases. If a student misses a question, the difficulty level of the next item decreases.
How long does it take to complete an iReady assessment?
iReady is designed to be as efficient as possible. On average, students will complete iReady in under 45 minutes for the primary grades and closer to an hour to 75 minutes in the intermediate grades. Some students may require more time and others less time. iReady is given 4 times a year but the data is used continuously.
How will a parent know how their children are doing?
Teachers share an overall profile of the student at conferences. Parents will learn about many the assessments and day-to-day classroom performance. iReady is just one data point in a broad collection of indicators and should NOT be the focus of the conference or given to parents.
How can parents help their child prepare for an iReady assessment?
The teacher administering the assessment uses pre-assessment instructions to explain the assessment to students. It is important for parents to encourage their children to try their best on the assessment. Since iReady is a general measure of student ability, students perform best on the assessment in the same way they perform best in school—when they have had plenty of rest, attend school regularly, and have eaten.

To enable the iPad to speak selected text, please go to:
- Settings
- General
- Accessibility
- Speech
- Speak Selection
- Toggle Speak Selection to green.
- Press the Home button.
- Go to a webpage in Safari to test it out.
- Swipe down with two fingers from the tip of the screen. You will see an icon pop up.
- Move the blue dots to the area that you want spoken aloud.
- Press SPEAK and the iPad will speak the words highlighted in blue
- If the speech is too fast or too slow, go back to the Speak Selection page. On the bottom, you will see SPEAKING RATE. Adjust as needed toward the turtle or the rabbit icon.
Innovative Teaching and Learning: It is important for the teacher set objectives for using Speak Selection.
- Highlight a sentence or main idea in an article and with Speak Selection turned on so students can listen to the main idea. This is helpful for auditory learners.
- Use Speak Selection for reading fluency. The iPad can be a model for a read aloud.
- Use Speak Selection for difficult text when teaching a whole group concept in Social Studies or Science.
NEXT STEPS
- Be prepared to share evidence of a science standard from STEMscopes during our next videoconference What do your students now know and are able to do because of this activity or assessment?
- Follow the directions on the September SMORE for iReady
- Use Toby & Alicia as your "go to EDU's" for any questions or support along the way. Contact info: toby.grosswald@nlcinc.com or alicia.lazz@nlcinc.com
- If you still need STEMscopes support to get on the site, please contact Michael directly at 281-833-4515.
- Look for the first KIPS Briefing coming to your inbox next month
IMPORTANT: NO CALL IN FOR OCTOBER. Instead you will be watching the training for iReady and getting the portal ready as per KIPS Briefing #1. Our next PD Videoconference will be November 29, 2018
