October 25, 2021

Week 9 of Term 1

Dear Ross Families,

I look forward to seeing everyone at our annual Halloween Spooktacular on Thursday, October 28. Check out the attached flier with details. Please note that this after hours event is the only Halloween celebration we hold at Ross. We do not have a celebration or costume wearing during the school day.

In case you missed it, check out the elementary school rankings from U.S. News and World Report. Ross is #1! https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/elementary-schools/district-of-columbia I am honored to lead such a wonderful community of learners. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to public education.

Warm Regards,

Holly Searl, Principal

Crossing Guard

DDOT has reported that a new crossing guard has been hired for the intersection at 17th and R Street and should begin the post on Monday, October 25. If this is your travel route to Ross, please make sure to welcome our new guard to the Ross community.

HVAC Update

The HVAC repairs are in the final stages of completion, just in time for DGS to transition buildings from cooling to heating for the approaching cooler weather. Once I receive an updated status report from DGS, I will share it with the community.

Supporting Learning at Home

Please refer to this resource if you want your child to have extra practice at home. This is in addition to any other resources/guidance from your child's teacher. Spelling Bee lists will be shared in Grades 2-5 this week.

DCPS Calendar Feedback for 2023-2026

To enable future planning and in alignment with DCMR regulations, DCPS will release the SY 23-26 calendars this upcoming winter. To support this process, proposed calendars area available for public feedback at this link.

Health and Safety

DCPS will now test 20% of the student population every week.

If your child successfully tests, you will receive a letter in backpack mail.

Let's continue to keep our community healthy by ensuring children are wearing well-fitting masks and only attending school if they are healthy. Please do not send your children to school if they are ill or displaying symptoms. If you answer "yes" to any of the "Ask, Ask, Look" health screening questions, that means your child should not attend school. If your family has a positive case, or is a close contact and needs to quarantine, please reach out me directly. As Principal, I am the COVID POC for Ross. When we have a case, we will follow all guidance and protocols from OSSE and DCPS. Protocols can be found here.
