Q&A with architect Glenn Angelle
Part I
Tell us a little about yourself.
From an early age I wanted to be an architect. It started when my dad hired an architect to add to our house in the small town of Breaux Bridge. I was one of nine kids and I was sleeping every night on the sofa in the den. Needless to say, I had a keen interest in his work. I remember helping the architect measure the existing house and after that I was hooked. Later on, when my local high school allowed me to take college courses my senior year, I jumped at the chance and enrolled at UL Lafayette majoring in architecture.I quickly realized how architecture is truly an urban profession. That is where the action is! Until I got to college I had not even met an architect, except of course the one my dad had hired. I mention this because after practicing for almost 40 years, looking back, I believe my decision to practice in the small town where I grew up was influenced by what I learned: there is a need to emphasize “Design Thinking” in our public discourse - not only in urban settings, but in small towns and parishes everywhere. I’m a believer that design matters and that we all have a stake in lifting our communities and the quality of life for all. That’s been my mission throughout my design career.
What is the building project's timeline?
We are working to get the project construction underway this fall with an aim to occupy by December of 2019.
The current educational emphasis is on collaborative learning and STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. We have incorporated open collaborative spaces within the Commons Building, provided for outdoor spaces for science education and even have designed two screened-in classrooms that teachers can share in their everyday lesson plans. A lake is designed into the master plan to allow for hands-on educational activities. While most school design discussion in the past has centered around "Teaching Spaces"- I like to refer to schools as “Learning Spaces” - to think of each space from the perspective of the student.
