CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Dec 2-Dec 6, 2019
Hello First Program Community,
Thank you kindly to all who were there to experience the students combined drama, music and art efforts in the Winter Concert. With a healthy balance of readiness and anticipation, the students were fantastic. Well done, Mr. Fejes, Ms. Stant, and Mr. Read! If you could not make it, please note that a combined exhibit of art from FP, MS, and HS will remain shown until the end of January.
It has been great to see that students are well-dressed in cold weather attire. The kids really like to get outside and play at recess, and to do so while being warmly dressed makes that all the more possible. A reminder that in the morning, if it is colder than +5 degrees celsius, then the students go directly into the school and do not spend time on the playground; however, recess and lunch are different. We try to have students outside as much as possible, as long as the air quality is acceptable and the weather is not too extreme, therefore students often play outdoors even in snow and cold weather.
A reminder to all about the week of school prior to winter break—Friday is a special day where the students come to school at the usual time; however, early dismissal occurs at 11am. There is no lunch served on Friday. Students do take part in their House Breakfast followed by the Candle Lighting Ceremony. This is a student only event, i.e. parents do not attend; at this point of our school’s growth, we can just barely fit all students into the Dalton Hall, but in the future, we will have to look at restructuring the event.
Here’s looking forward to great last week of school in 2019!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring G2, Art, and Volleyball.
G2 with Ms. Bahr
This term in Grade 2, students learned all about government. At the end of term 2, we decided to combine our knowledge about government and their roles in our community by voting for student council positions in our class. Together, we discussed the responsibilities of a class president, class treasurer, and class secretary. Students then thought of a position they would want to run for and why they would be a good candidate to represent the class. This week, students started to make their campaign posters to show that they’re interested in becoming the class representative of the position they chose.
Next week, students will share their ideas to help better the class and community around us. At the end, students will then vote for the candidate they think would be the best for each student council job.
Winter Art Exhibition
Thank you to all the parents, students, and teachers who helped to make this year’s Winter Art Exhibition a success! This year’s exhibition featured artwork from every student in the CDS art program from grades PK-12. Drawing, weaving, mixed media and painting were among the art media featured in the FP exhibit. Thanks especially to the PTA for providing drinks and snacks for the reception! If you weren’t able to attend the opening, there’s still time to see the artwork! The show will be open through January 31st, see you there!
Grade 3-5 Volleyball @ CI with Ms. Drews
Six students from 4th and 5th Grade represented CDS at the Volleyball Clinic at Chadwick over the Thanksgiving holiday. Students learned and practiced how to rotate when their team serves. They also worked on bumping and setting skills. After rotating through four stations, they played with other schools in their grade. The games at the end of the event were challenging, yet fun. Our students showed sportsmanship by cheering on their teammates for trying their best. They shook hands and said, “Good game!.” to the other teams. Nice work, Little Phoenixes!
