Important Information for You!

Thomson Trading Post-Week 1

Last Friday we had our first Thomson Trading Post and the kids were very excited to see it in action. We had 119 students that had earned enough stickers to fill up there chart and choose a prize. That is approximately 32% of our student population. While I am not saying we should be giving out stickers when they haven't been earned, I also want to remind everyone to make a conscious effort to recognize students who are following Cardinal Code. Our next Trading Post dates are November 22nd and December 6th...let's try to ensure that all students visit the Trading Post by December 6th. This will help create a 'hook' for the kids and make them want to return, which in turn with improve behavior.

Also, did you know that our lunch monitors are using stamps....and if a student returns from lunch with a stamp, they should also get a sticker or stamp for their Cardinal Code sheet? This way the lunch monitors can quickly recognize students 'keeping the code' and the students are losing stickers all over the building.

World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day is Wednesday, Nov. 13. All Thomson students and staff members will receive a Cardinal Compliment card to write a special note of recognition or encouragement to a classmate, teacher, parent, community member or individual they would like to recognize. You should have received Cardinal Complement cards in your mailboxes. If you are sending cards to former students, you will find interoffice envelopes in the office addressed to Hahn, the Middle School, and the High School. We will send these envelopes on Friday if you’d like to add yours to the envelope. Kindness matters!

Article Study

Don't forget the article study to go with Literacy Essential 3 is this Tuesday, November 12th from 4:15-6:15. I hope that more Thomson staff will attend and be part of the professional discussion and learning that will be taking place. If you haven't rsvp'd and would like to attend, please let me know before you leave Monday.

Cool to Care Campaign

Sara Howes has reached out to the high school again this year to get volunteers to come and collect and sort the items that are in your classrooms. Please make sure that you are keeping track of your classroom totals as students bring in items. We will be setting up the sorting/boxing area this week. Thank you for all your support with this project!

This week there will be a 'special' Cool to Care Day for the staff...bring in 10 items or $5 on Friday and you may wear jeans. The items that are brought in may be added to your classroom totals, but money can not. This is also the staff pot-luck day in honor of the MSU/U of M game Saturday, so feel free to show your support for your favorite team.

Fire Drill Procedures

There has been lots of talk around school fire drill procedures and that a fire alarm may be pulled as a means of getting students out of classrooms for even more nefarious purpose. For this reason, I would like to introduce you to new fire drill procedures we will use:

  1. Teachers will check the hallway first before students leave.

  2. Teachers and students will leave the classroom door open (escape route).

  3. Teachers will take attendance or headcount at a teacher determined spot outside.

See how west Michigan schools are changing the way they conduct fire drills as well. See the link below (short news video).

Brrr...It's Cold Outside

It's getting cold outside. Please include a reminder in your newsletters for parents to send coats, gloves, hats and boots so our students can enjoy playing at recess. Also, if you have a student that is in need of any of these items, please let Jason or me know and we can help get them.

Data Days

Don't forget that this Tuesday, four person PLCs will have their Data Day. Due to some staff being out, I will need to change the three person PLC Data Day to a date next week. Please make sure that you have all the items on the agenda and come prepared with all the data needed. If you have any questions about any of these items, please let me know.

Quotes Worth Reading

"It is not joy that makes us GRATEFUL, it is gratitude that makes us JOYFUL."

-Unknown

I hope that last week you had a moment to express your gratitude to someone for the role they play in your life. If you did, I bet you felt a little more joyful.

Do ONE Thing and Make a Big Difference!

Grateful, Thankful, Blessed! This week week you will find three columns up on the whiteboard in the lounge and a basket of sticky notes. Please take a moment to share something you are grateful, thankful, and blessed to have in your life. See how doing this 'one' thing will help make you a little happier and your day a little brighter.
