Mrs. Morse's Weekly Newsletter
February 18th-22nd
My P.2 and P.3 Classes (Cambridge Literature)
Last week we began our study of comma rules and continued working on a prompt essay. Due to an unexpected absence on Tuesday, we did not get quite as much accomplished as I had planned, but we will get caught up this week. On Tuesday, students will be finishing and turning in their essays. Wednesday through Friday we will continue with commas. As long as none of the this bad weather comes our way this week, we will be done with all of our comma rules on Friday. We would then be ready for our comma assessment on Tuesday, February 26th. We will also be reviewing semicolon and colon rules this week through our bellringers.
After our comma assessment we will continue our focus on the writing process, with special attention to editing and revising. We will focus on checking for subject/verb agreement, pronoun/antecedent agreement, and maintaining consistent verb tense in their writing. We will also continue to review our punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
Over the next two weeks, the students will be taking a released Writing SOL (the multiple choice section). The purpose of this is to expose them to the style of questions they will encounter on March 12th, allow for us to work together to address any areas of weakness, and practice implementing testing strategies to help the students not only work through the test more effectively, but also lower any testing anxiety some of them might be feeling. I will also be meeting with each student, individually, to conference with them and provide them with one-on-one feedback about their writing.
I will be holding after school review/PIP sessions every Tuesday and Thursday the next few weeks. If your student would like to review for the Writing SOL or has any areas of weakness about which they are concerned, please encourage him/her to speak with me about staying after.
Finally, the last Writing Prompt HW will be due this Friday (February 22nd). Some students took their final homework with them on Thursday. Any student who did not receive the final assignment on Thursday will get it in class on Tuesday. Next week, NoRedInk homework will continue (with a focus on commonly confused words).
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
Important Upcoming Dates
Monday, February 18th: President's Day (NO SCHOOL)
Friday, February 22nd: Writing Prompt HW #4 due
Tuesday, February 26th: Comma Assessment
Tuesday, March 12th: Writing SOL (multiple choice)
