End of Year

It's hard to believe we already are at the end of the school year! May is a busy month with parent-teacher conferences, park days and saying goodbye to several families. Read ahead for more information.

May Nature Club

For our May Nature Club event, we'd like to invite you to school to help us work in our OWLS butterfly garden. The garden needs some serious attention! I will have annual and perennial flowers - both host and nectar - to plant ... but first we need to weed. Bring your garden gloves, spades and a six pack of flowers to plant in the garden! Bring a picnic and we will have lunch after gardening.

Show and Tell

Show and Tell will be suspended for the next several months. With us being at the park three days a week, it is very difficult to schedule. It isn't practical do to SNT at the park, and there aren't enough school days to schedule everyone. We will resume SNT in the winter when we are at school more often.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

We have parent-teacher conferences scheduled for May 10th & 12th from 1-5 pm. Use the link you received in your email to sign up for a time slot on the Sign Up Genius website. At spring conferences, we will share with you the progress your child has made during the school year, set summer goals and answer any questions you may have about your child's development. If the days and times available do not work for you, please feel free to schedule a time to meet with Rosanna the following week.

Park Days

Just a reminder that every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are park days, weather permitting. You have received a schedule for the month of May, and there is a copy posted in the classroom. Parent volunteers are welcomed and encouraged, especially on our busiest classes - Wednesday and Friday mornings. You can sign up on the Sign Up Genius website or just show up! :)

Hellos and Goodbyes

May is a sad month, when we say goodbye to several friends leaving for the summer:

Evan Keeler, Shane, Anna, Hadley and Meyers. We will miss you! Have a wonderful summer and an amazing first year of school!

We will also be welcoming new families to the program:

Simon joined our Tuesday/Thursday morning class in March!

Karson joined our Friday morning class in April!

Eknoor joined our M/W pm and Friday am class in April!

Schaefer and Sloane will be joining Friday mornings on May 20th!

Beatrice will join the Tuesday/Thursday morning class on May 10th!

Outdoors

Spring is a very muddy time on the Natureplay playground. Please dress accordingly! We highly recommend a change of clothes for after school. Due to after class responsibilities, teachers will not be able to take children inside to change. You are welcome to use our classroom restrooms to change. With temperatures on the rise, children are welcome to wear or bring swimsuits to wear for outdoor time. Please let us know if you would like us to have children put on a swimsuit prior to heading outside.

Donations

Thank you for all of your donations of recycled materials. The children have been very creative using the materials over the past few weeks! We will continue to accept donations of small items, but are running short on room for boxes and larger materials. Please hold off on bringing in larger items for the time being. We will let you know when we are ready for more!

We can use more donations of broken appliances! The children LOVE the take-apart station, but we need more items to take apart. If you have any items, please let us know. Don't forget to look for items at garage sales!

Summer Camp

Summer Camp begins June 6th. Campers will be in the classroom Monday-Thursday afternoons (12:30-3:30). Campers and preschoolers will be kept separate. Children attending preschool in the afternoon will drop off inside, and spend 90 minutes inside before heading outside. Campers will be dropped off outside, and then switch midway through class with the preschoolers. Rosanna will run the camp program, while Katherine runs the preschool program. I know this is a confusing time of year, so please don't hesitate to ask questions.

New Staff

We have hired Miss Amanda McGarry to work at the preschool this summer. Amanda works with Miss Katherine at the karate school. Amanda will work on park days beginning at the end of May. She may also step in to help on school days if needed. She is very excited to join Natureplay!

Miss Laura will be returning this summer to work in the summer camp. You may occasionally see her in the preschool as well. We are thrilled to have her back to help this year.

Rosanna - news

Rosanna will be headed to Colorado over Memorial Day Weekend. She will receive National Park Passport stamps at the Great Sand Dunes as well as Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Rosanna will be off on May 31st, returning to school on June 1st.

Rosanna will be one of the featured artists at Images Art Gallery in Downtown Overland Park. You are all invited to come to the Opening Night Reception on May 20th from 6-9 pm. Light refreshments and drinks will be served. I hope you can stop by for a short while!
