Letter from the Lions Park Principal
Dear Lions Park Families,
Thanks to you, your children and our staff for the many ways all have been caring and supportive of one another as our community faces the tragic loss of Lauren Graver. I am more convinced than ever that Lions Park is a special place for students to learn and for staff to work.
As we begin the new calendar year, it is a good time for students to set goals for this second half of the school year. Encourage your child to think of areas where they would like to learn and grow. These may be personal areas or academic areas. I prefer to set goals than to make resolutions because I find I am more likely to follow through on things when I use SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time bound). If your child wants to "read more", you could help him or her to make this goal more meaningful by helping him or her to say they would like to "Read two extra minutes each day for ten days until they are reading 20 minutes per day."
Progress reports went home today with all fifth grade students and with any student in second-fourth grade who is not making adequate progress with the academics or behavior. The goal of these reports is to provide students with time to make improvements before report cards. If your child has areas identified for improvement, these might be good goal areas for your child.
Staff will be doing benchmark assessments in reading and math during this month. Grade level teams will then meet to look at the data and make decisions about how to target current needs. All students will read with a teacher to determine their reading level. They will also all have their reading fluency tested to see how many words per minute they are able to read. All students also take the MCAP (Mathematics Concepts and APplications). This eight minute test assesses problem solving skills. Students receiving interventions from our math support and literacy support teachers will take the MAP tests in the area(s) where they are receiving services. We look forward to celebrating how much our students have grown since the start of the year!
Thanks,
Katie Kelly
