Short Avenue IB Learners Strive to Be...
Mr. Lamb's Updates
Happy Weekend Short Avenue Families and Friends!
Happy New Year! I am hopeful that all had a joyous and restful three-week vacation. We return to school tomorrow, Monday, January 8 and we are looking forward to having all students on time and ready to learn!
I am old enough to remember all of the energy and lead up to āThe Millenniumā back in 1999 as the year 2000 rapidly approached. To think/realize/believe that it is already 2024 is stunning and gives me pause. How quickly time flies.
Every start of a new year brings, especially through the media, the push for new and better all couched in endless questions. What are you going to change? What are you never going to do again? Why are you glad that 2023 is over? And the most constant question of all, what is your New Yearās resolution? This question is asked so often that, for me, it loses meaning. The push is for lofty goals and big changes. By February, for many, it is a punchline that our goals or resolutions are already derailed. This is because we live in the real and the here and the now. Having goals is good. Trying to better ourselves is fantastic. The reality is, however, that betterment takes time and that goals need many little victories, often amongst setbacks, before they can be achieved. This is what we need to make sure to remember and to impart on our children.
I shared before the notion of Be 10% Better. I do not think that a person can quickly make large epic changes in life. There are so many elements at play that affect what we do in our day to day. But how can we adjust something small that over time will become bigger. Perhaps you are running late and rushing every morning. To say that I am never going to be late in 2024 is lofty and something we all understand and support. But when you are late once, or twice, does this mean that the goal is not attainable? I say find a part of the larger goal and focus on improving that - find the 10%. If you are waking up at 6:30 and every morning is a rush perhaps the move is to set the alarm for 6:15am. If there is so much to do in the morning, see what you can do the night before. An example from my own life to make mornings more smooth is that when I get home I clean up my lunch from the day and then make my lunch for the next day and I get my wifeās coffee ready for the next morning. I am in the mode. I get it done. The next morning now has two less things to worry about; two less things to rush; two less things to do. Most of us do not need wholesale changes. We just need to find our 10% to begin to move in the right direction.
My ask for our community and with our school is to find your 10% and to make it a habit. There will be hiccups on the road, but from this 10% to the next, over time we will all improve. I am looking forward to this 2nd semester and am excited to continue my journey with all of you.
As always, please be safe. And please enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you Monday!

Sibling Enrollment for 2024/25 School Year:
Do you have a younger sibling at home who you would love to come to Short Ave next school year? We are starting a SIBLING LIST, and ask that you please fill out this Google Doc, so that we have you all in one place! This list is for both our current neighborhood families with younger siblings, and our families on permit with younger siblings. To be eligible for TK/UTK, children need to have birthdays between September 2, 2019 and September 1st, 2020.
https://forms.gle/rUtjhx7CCyd1tbMS8
Please know that we have become VERY popular with our resident neighborhood families, and expect that Kindergarten for 24/25 will be very full. Resident neighborhood families are guaranteed a spot. But we do not know if we will have spots in Kindergarten for siblings on permit. We do anticipate being able to take siblings for TK from our current families on permit, but will most likely delay enrolling siblings until later in the spring when we have a better sense of our numbers. This is a change from last year, when we enrolled siblings in March with our neighborhood families.
Current Short Ave families do not need to take a tour, and we kindly ask that you leave tour spaces for new families. All enrollment and tour info is now on our website. For those families with friends who want to tour Short Ave, the tour RSVP will open November 1st, when a google doc to sign up will be on our school website. Families on permit with younger siblings will be at the top of the waitlist and will have priority over new families trying to enroll to Short for the first time.
If you have questions about this, please reach out to me at avril.lipsky@lausd.net
