Community Connections: Involving Family in Homework
As adolescents enter middle school, they are spending more time away from home due to school, extra-curriculars, and other commitments. This can cause a decrease in communication between adolescents and their parents at a time when trust of parental figures is extremely influential and important (Kerr, Stattin, and Trost 1999). As communication decreases, gaps may be created between student learning at school and family discussions at home. For instance, in a past evaluation of my sixth-grade science classroom practices, many students had not shared with their parents the new style of unit book we started using. This inspired an investigation into the connections among parents, students, and the science classroom. Click to read more.
