You Hold the Reins
Are highly effective, reflective teachers born or made? The latter. You are in charge of your own development. You are in charge of our own thinking. You don’t need to wait for someone else to arrive and tell you what to do, how to do it, what to think about it, and why it’s important. With self-reflection you can, and you must take the reins of your own growth, development, and improvement. In order to increase skill and cultivate expertise at anything, we’ve got to engage in rigorous and consistent reflection about it. Interestingly, one of the simplest and most direct ways to eradicate the doing-thinking gap is by identifying and pursuing a specific purpose for engaging in work. When there exists an ineradicable link between the two, our productivity soars and our sense of fulfillment goes through the roof. Educators tend to make this connection naturally. We are enthralled by the idea that our daily work will better the lives of the young people under our charge, we are inspired to impact the future positively, and we are stirred to influence the greater good. What nobler calling can you imagine? And if this is indeed your passion, your mission, or your raison d’etre, then aren’t you likewise committed to continuous growth and professional improvement?
