Bobcat Bulletin February 17, 2022
Where the Wild Things Are
Mrs. Anderson- Principal
Hello Bobcat Families!
It is February and it is hard to believe that Spring Break is only 3 weeks away. Our students are almost half-way through quarter 3, and FSA state testing for grades 3-5 is right around the corner!
A huge shout out to our staff and parents that helped to make our “at home” Student Led Conferences a huge success. I hope that each family walked away with valuable information and data about their child’s academic and behavioral growth so far this year. I am always excited to witness the collaboration between home and school to ensure the academic success of our Bobcat Scholars!
I hope that you have had a chance to talk to your child about our Leader in Me Habit #4 this month. Think Win-Win! Think Win-Win is the habit of mutual benefit. When we think this way, we look for benefits for ourselves, but also for others. If we start listening to how we communicate with other people, we might be surprised. Are we more concerned about ourselves or mutual benefit? When I think of this habit, I reflect on the famous quote by Helen Keller – “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” As a parent not everything is negotiable, but if you go into discussions with your child with a win-win mindset, you will find much less resistance. I can’t wait to hear about our “win-win” conversations!
Have a great week ahead!

Science Corner with Ms. Lopez
Greetings Bobcats! It is the third Thursday of the month and that means science time has arrived!
First, let’s get an overview. Below, are topics that will be covered for the month of February in each grade. Parents, next to each topic are some questions you can ask your child to reinforce their learning at home.
With that in mind, I encourage each student to be thinking about the questions listed below daily. Better yet, I advise you to keep a journal where you can add notes and drawings about what you observe and learn regarding the topics.
Til’ next time…remember to work hard and be responsible. That’s a sure recipe for success!
The Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Guettler
We are very excited that our students now have the opportunity to earn Bobcat Bucks. These grade level bucks are used to recognize students right away who demonstrate:
· Random or extraordinary acts of kindness
· Positive character traits
· Consistent effort over time to follow the Bobcat 3 R’s (see below)
· Demonstrating Leader In Me
· Meeting stated goals/expectations
Students have the option to use their bucks at the Bobcat cart, Friday mornings, as they start their day or save it for another opportunity. Bobcat Bucks are used to motivate and encourage students’ positive behavior while recognizing and rewarding appropriate actions, significant displays of good character, and marked effort and improvement toward personal and academic successes.
Every student has an equal opportunity to earn Bobcat Bucks based on the above criteria. They aren’t distributed for “every little behavior”. Instead, they are awarded randomly to reward consistency, improvements and immediately recognize great acts of character. Students are encouraged to perform such acts because it’s the right thing to do in building our positive character, not for the reward.
Students know that they may be rewarded for certain actions, but not always. They are consistently being taught to do the right thing, not for the reward but because of the sense of pride they will feel at knowing they did a good deed.
We recognize acts and behaviors of students and therefore it is important that a Bobcat Buck should not be taken away from students for other behaviors. Doing so would ‘take away’ the positive act that earned the student that Buck in the first place.
BOBCAT 3 R’s
RESPONSIBLE: Is taking ownership of your words, thoughts and actions. We practice this trait in our ‘little things’ like taking care of our belongings, homework, and owning up to our mistakes. We practice this by doing our best, not making excuses and correcting mistakes.
RESOURCEFUL: This of resourceful people as “full of resources”, or tools for coming up with solutions. They adapt well to new or difficult situations, and they can think creatively. For example: If a pet gets loose in a pet store, a resourceful person will be able to figure out how to lure it back into the cage again.
RESPECTFUL: If you’re respectful, you show you care for someone or something. To be respectful, you might sit in respectful silence when your teacher enters the room.

Attendance Matters
We have so many things to celebrate when it comes to attendance!
EPE had 146 students who had perfect attendance for Quarter 2. All students received a certificate and one student from each grade level was recognized on the news. We can't wait to see how many students achieve perfect attendance for Quarter 3.
CONGRATULATIONS to our 5th graders who won the Highest Average Daily Attendance award for two weeks in a row! Their attendance has been off the charts. 97.72% for the week of 2/7-2/11.
Our Most Improved Attendance Award goes to our PreK and 5th Graders.
PreK improved from 80%-87.78% and 5th grade attendance increase from 93.16% to 97.72%.
Our school-wide attendance has increased from 91% to 95% within the last two weeks! Thank you all for adhering to our attendance expectations. Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade or be held back---so thank you families for making this a priority!
We are so proud of our Bobcats! See you by 7:45 am each and every day.

K-2 are steadily increasing their knowledge of place value. Students are working hard solving problems involving addition and subtraction.

4th grade students have been learning about unit fractions, solving real world problems involving fractions, and determining which operation to use.
5th grade is all about decimals, place value, and using efficient strategies to solve the reasonableness of a situation.
