Global Education at Pleasant Union
During the month of November, our SDG is Zero Hunger. This is an issue that occurs around the world and locally within our community. As we design instruction for our students this month, please keep this SDG in mind. During PLT, have discussions about how this SDG can be incorporated within the curriculum to help our students better understand our world. For additional resources, please check out the PUE Global Site linked here. While we will have a school-wide food drive, we also want to make sure that there are ongoing opportunities within the classroom to learn about the SDGs each month.
October 31
Please send an email to Kiley and Kayla if you are allowing students to wear costumes on October 31. Students may wear costumes that reflect book characters but nothing violent or scary is acceptable. Additionally costumes may not include weapons. Students must also still adhere to the WCPSS Dress Code policy. If your class will wear costumes, please communicate these expectations to parents.

Schedules
Playground Safety
We have recently reviewed data related accident reports on the playground. In an effort to maintain safety on the playground, please remind students of playground expectations. Additionally, it is important that all staff is actively supervising students during recess. Please do not hesitate to report any issues with playground equipment or our grounds that need attention. We thank you for all you do to support student safety here at school.
Veterans Day Concert
Veterans Day is less than a month away, and Pleasant Union always enjoys recognizing families and friends who have served in the Armed Forces. As well as two concerts of patriotic music, we do a wall in the lobby highlighting those people who are our heroes. If you have a special veteran in your life that you would like to recognize on this wall, please consider sending in a copy of a photo of this person. Please label the back of any photos so that they can be returned.
For more details about the concerts, please check out Ms. Freer’s Google site on the Pleasant Union webpage.
Thanks for helping us honor our veterans!
Readvolution
For the third consecutive year, we will partner with the Carolina Hurricanes to bring READvolution to all of our elementary schools. This exciting partnership will support a community-wide literacy campaign around daily reading outside of school, plus allow students the chance to attend a Hurricanes game. This year the READvolution time frame will be between Monday, Sept. 30 and Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Students will be able to be part of this event by reading daily for 20 minutes! Parents will log their students reading times on the online log in. Please ensure you have sent the email Kayla sent to you to your parents and encourage their nightly reading times.
Teacher of the Year
It's that time of the year when we recognize one of our amazing teachers with the honor of being the Pleasant Union Teacher of the Year. Staff members should nominate a teacher by writing a brief description of how the teacher nominee embodies the bulleted criteria below. Please send me your teacher nominee and description by Wednesday, October 30.
We would also like to recognize a Teacher Assistant of the year. Please send those nominations to Kayla by Wednesday, October 30 also.
