First making a submarine plan
Then building submarines with blocks
Then beginning to build their own submarines with other materials
They wrote questions to someone who had lived on a submarine - a submarine expert!
Here's a small selection of their questions & Casey, the submarine expert's responses:
- Did you see any cool animals like deep deep deep deep (x10) in the water?
- Did you see any new animals?
- What kind of animals did you see?
"I have seen dolphins swimming alongside the submarine when we were on the surface. They like to play in the waves that the submarine makes! There are no windows on the submarine, so we can't see any animals when we underwater. We could hear lots of them, though! A submarine knows what is around it by listening. There are microphones around the submarine and you can listen for ships around you so you don't bump into them. You also can hear lots of animals. We heard dolphins and whales, as well as seals. Bearded seals that live up near the North Pole make a sound like whistling when they are swimming around. We heard lots of shrimp, too! They are really noisy. The make popping sounds that you can hear from really far away. I'm sure there were other interesting animals around us, but if they kept quiet we didn't know they were there."
It's carrying lots of important things.
It's got a propellor.
It's got a toilet.
Ask your Pine:
-What makes a shape a triangle?
-What shapes are in the quadrilateral family?
A special visit!
Directing and acting out stories is a great way to think about who's talking, what are the characters doing, and where are they? Ask your Pine about the scenes they acted in or directed this week.
Summer work
In conferences we've given out grey folders with a collection of things to do over the summer. We will miss these kiddos and hope to get some great postcards!
We hope that any "Independent Projects" that are a success are documented in photos or brought to school to share in the fall!
Monday's trip to Court 16 to play tennis!
Thanks to the folks who have already signed up to join us. More chaperones are welcome if you'd like to come. We'll be taking the train to Gowanus.
We'll probably leave school around 9:45am and return around 1:00 or 1:30
