Celebrating Black History Month at Pryor
by Skyla Fairfield
In 7th grade English Language Arts, we read and wrote about slavery and renowned abolitionists. One of our texts was a biography of Harriet Tubman, a fugitive slave who helped more than 300 other slaves escape. Tubman was able to avoid capture while working as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, because the slave owners were looking for a man. Another text was a letter written by Frederick Douglass, a famous abolitionist who was an eloquent writer and speaker.
We learned a lot about historical slavery and enjoyed the unit.

Coming to Pryor as a New Student
by Kylie Stahla
Hello! My name is Kylie Stahla, and I am new here at Pryor.
When I first arrived at Pryor, I was a little overwhelmed because I didn’t know where my classes were. Luckily, I had one of the Pirate Deckhand Crew members guide me around. Even after the tour I was unsure of where my classes were, but the other students in my classes helped me around the school. Some of them called me Kylie Jenner, and I don’t even look like her-- lol.
All the kids here are really nice, and I made a few friends quickly. By the end of the first week, I was able to get to all my classes without looking at my schedule or following someone else. Being new here at Pryor wasn’t at all nerve wracking.
Sunshine Dance
by Ainsley Giachetti
My heart, I can hear it
Cannot move a muscle
I think I’m in trouble
From backstage I shuffle my feet to the stage
Only to be barricaded in a cage
Butterflies in my stomach
I’m stuck in on a hammock
Stuck in my fear, cannot escape
Face my fear, I must reshape
The crowd, once more quiet
Hoping not to have a riot
I realize, this is my chance
In one glance
I took the advance, to dance
Shine down on me, yellow spotlight
When I dance, I take flight
Hear the applause
At the end, freeze like i’m paused
With a wide smile
I felt like I ran a mile
I figured out my passion
And trust me i’ll never cash in
