Sedotta e Abbandonata (Seduced and Abbandoned), Pietro Germi, 1964
How far would a family go to maintain its honor? This film, following in the commedia all'italiana tradition of director Pietro Germi's earlier Divorzio all'italiana ("Divorce, Italian Style," 1961), interrogates the problematic Sicilian practice of matrimonio riparatore (rehabilitating marriage), in which young couples whose secret trysts were discovered were forced to marry in order to protect their families' reputations. An inward-looking satire of Southern Italian customs, Sedotta e Abbandonata promises an entertaining yet sincere look at Sicilian society.
