Congratulations to the HMS Photo Contest Finalists!
Three professional Michigan photographers were gracious enough to lend their time to judge this year's competition. The judges were asked to look for the very best photos that included the following: clarity and crispness of image quality, advanced lighting techniques, and an artistic theme represented through student's voices.
Out of the 85 photographs submitted, the top HMS finalists are:

Summer School Announcement 2021
Students and Parents,
I am excited to announce a Summer School opportunity for our students this year. We have around 20 openings left to fill. If you are interested in signing up your student, please fill out the survey below. The survey will close on Friday, May 14th. If more than 20 students are interested I will hold a lottery to fill the spots.
Here are the details:
We will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the following weeks:
Weeks of June 14, 21, and 28
Weeks of July 12, 19, and 26
Bussing is provided
Students will be dropped off at 8:30 for breakfast. Class begins at 9:00 and will run until 12:00 PM
Students will be sent home with a sack lunch
We will have mixed grade-level classrooms, up to 15 students per classroom
One certified teacher will be assigned to each classroom
One paraprofessional will support throughout the day
Students will be enrolled in a Khan Academy Classroom and will receive instructional content through Khan Academy

Curriculum: We will use the prescribed math curriculum first in Khan Academy and then the following courses depending on grade level and need of individual students:

The classroom teacher will manage the Khan Academy classroom as well as any individual/whole group remediation they feel is necessary
Students who sign up must attend all sessions
At the end of the final session, students will take the NWEA benchmark test in Math and ELA to gather data on the effectiveness of the program as well as the progress of the student
As a staff, we have already identified the students who must attend. The remaining available seats are open to the general student population. If you think this program is right for you and your student, please feel free to fill out the survey below. The survey closes on Friday, May 14th. I will contact everyone, regardless of acceptance, who submits an entry the week of May 24th.

Electronic Devices
Cell phones are to be turned off and kept in their lockers during the school day. Cell phones that are used during the school day will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent.
If a student needs to contact a parent/guardian, they can go to the office to either use their cell phone or call from the office phone. If a parent needs to reach a student, they can leave a message for their student with the office.
Dress Code
1. Dress should be neat, clean, comfortable, and in good taste. Shoes will be worn at all times.
2. The wearing of hats and head coverings are prohibited in school. Exceptions may include Spirit Days keeping within the guidelines of that specific Spirit Day.
3. If poor personal hygiene becomes disruptive to the educational environment, parents will be contacted, and appropriate steps to resolve the issue will be taken.
4. Non-prescription sunglasses will not be worn in the school building.
5. Shirts need to be appropriate: Tops that expose the midriff, cleavage, back, or bare sides (such as muscle shirts, tank tops, or cut-off t-shirts) are considered inappropriate. Sleeveless shirts must be a minimum of a hand’s width wide on the shoulder. Strapless tops are not allowed.
6. Skirt/Skort/Shorts length must come to a minimum of the student’s fingertips when arms are naturally at the side.
7. Clothing must not be too tight, too short, too sheer, or too revealing whether standing or seated, this includes tights and leggings, that may be deemed inappropriate by an administrator. If you choose to wear these items where the outline of private body parts are noticeable, a long top must cover all a student’s privy parts fully.
8. Clothing that allows undergarments to be seen are not allowed. This includes pants with holes and “sagging” pants.
9. Any article of clothing that graphically depicts anything in poor taste (i.e. tobacco/alcohol products or advertisements, profanity, etc.) will not be allowed.
10. Coats and backpacks shall remain with the student until lockers are assigned.
NOTE: Interpretation of the Dress Code is left to the discretion of school staff members. Any form of extreme or conspicuous dress that disrupts the educational process will be subject to corrective action and/or disciplinary action see page 10 for consequences. Students in violation of the dress code will not be permitted to attend regular classes until properly dressed.
NEW 2020-21: All students are required to wear masks properly over the nose and mouth. The mask will be subject to the same rules as other attire. Any masks deemed disruptive or distracting may result in a dress code violation.

Office Business
ATTENDANCE
Please call the Middle School office at (269) 793-7407 within 24 hours of your students' absence. You may leave a message on our voicemail system day or night. When reporting illness, please inform the secretary of the type of symptoms your child is experiencing (fever, sore throat, ect.). If your child is absent 2 days or more, you may request homework. If your student is absent only 1 day, homework may be picked up from their teachers the following day. You may also email absences to jennhitc@hpsvikings.org.

IMMUNIZATIONS
Please report all immunizations that your child has had so we are able to keep our school records up to date. All new students and all 6th graders must be completely up to date on all immunizations. Contact the HMS office if you have any questions.
MEDICATION
ALL medications needing to be dispensed to students must be supplied from home. The school does not provide any type of medication. All prescription medication must be provided in a pharmacy labeled bottle. Tylenol/Aspirin must be brought to the office in an unopened bottle. All students requiring any type of medication must have a medication form completed by their parents and on file in the office.
CHANGES in Phone Numbers, Home Address & E-Mail
Please inform the office any time there are changes in your address or phone numbers. We need to have this information so we can update our records and successfully contact you if needed.
