Cougar Cubs' Corner
Ms. Villarnovo's monthly classroom newsletter!
November News
After a busy October month, our class is looking forward to learning more fun and exciting objectives as well as enjoying a relaxing Thanksgiving break! Throughout this month we will be learning many facts about Thanksgiving and the history behind it.
Highlighting Our Learning
Reading
Our class is en route to becoming avid life-long readers! This month our cubs will be learning about rhyming words and syllables. We will be reading many different books with rhyming words as well as practicing nursery rhymes. Make sure to ask your cubs to point out rhyming words to you in books, music, movies, or poetry.
Our class' book picks for the month of November are:
Come Rhyme With Me!
This book is a favorite among the students. It is an alphabet picture book with rhyming words. Words are hidden under flaps and students are encouraged to guess the hidden rhyming word.
Moose on the Loose
This is an entertaining book that has the students laughing out loud with creative and whimsical illustrations. The children love to guess the rhyming words that will come up next.
The Neighbor-hood Mother Goose
This modern collection of Mother Goose nursery rhymes presents students with an introduction to poetry through rhythm and rhyme. With it's creative use of photography, many different backgrounds and settings are presented.
Math
In math, our students are counting up to items! We will continue to work on numbers and shapes. Students will now be able to recognize, describe, and draw several shapes. In order to make this a little more fun, we will go on a scavenger hunt in the classroom to find and describe as many shapes as we can!
Social Studies
This month, our cubs are learning all about community helpers. They will be able to distinguish different community workers, their working environment, and describe their roles and responsibilities. A special thanks to the local volunteer fire department who will kindly take time from their busy schedules to come to school with their fire truck to show and tell with our students! Your cubs will likely share all that they have learned from this special opportunity.
Community Workers
In our dramatic workstation, students will be able to dress up as a community worker and play the role according to what they have learned!
Volunteer Fire Department
We are thankful for the local volunteer fire department taking the time to speak to our students about their job. Students will also have the opportunity to walk through the fire truck!
In-School Field Trip
We will also be taking a "field trip" around the school in order to get to know some community helpers in school as well. We will speak to people such as: the principal, janitor, school nurse, cafeteria staff, and several more!
