The Ozark Mountains
By: Lauren Thompson
People have lived in the Ozarks since the late Ice Age. The fierce Osage Indians, known for being great warriors, lived in the Ozarks long ago.
The Ozark Mountains occupy an area of about 50,000 square miles. The Boston Mountains are the highest section of the Ozarks. They are 35 miles wide and 200 miles long.
The Ozarks are located in Northern Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Southeastern Kansas, and Illinois. Most of the Ozark Mountains are covered in trees. They also include white lakes, black lakes, and ancient rocks.
The Ozarks are one of the planet's oldest mountain ranges. Primitive men arrived there over 7,500 years ago. Volcanic ash from ancient explosions are now rocks in the Ozarks.
The soil in the Ozarks is considered very poor, due to frequent droughts.
